631 War Services of Retired Majors.
97 Major C. D. C. Ellis served with the and Battalion 60th Rifles in the Kaffir war of 1851-53 (Medal). WasD.A.Q.M.
(General at Head Quarters of the Turkish Contingent in the Crimea from Dec. 1855 to June 1856 (Turkish Medal).
Also served in the Oude campaign of 1858—commanded a Detachment of the 60th Rifles at the affair of Mehndee—
and present at the action of Biswah. Commanded the 1st Battalion during the pursuit through the Khyreeghur
jungles (Medal, and Brevet of Major).
98 Major B. Drew served with the 75th Regiment throughout the campaign before Delhi in 1857, including the
battle of Budlee ke Serai; commanded the Grenadier Company at the assault of Delhi and ultimately the Regiment;
accompanied Colonel Greathed’s pursuing Column, and was present at the affairs of Allyghur and Akbarabad and
battles of Bolundshuhur and Agra; served in the advance into Oude under Sir Colin Campbell, and on the relief of
the Garrison of Lucknow remained with General Outram’s Force at Alumbagh, and took part in the several repulses
of the enemy (Medal with two Clasps, and Brevet of Major).
99 Major Duff served with the 23rd Fusiliers in the Eastern campaign of 1854, including the siege of Sebastopol
and battle of Inkerman where he was taken prisoner (Medal with two Clasps, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and
Turkish Medal).
100 Major Dunbar served with the Buffs in the Crimean campaign from 1st May 1855, including the siege and fall
of Sebastopol and assault of the Redan on the 8th September—wounded (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal).
101 Major Dandas served with the 12th Regiment in the Kaffir war of 1852-53 (Medal).
102 Major Elmsall served with the 1st Dragoons in the Eastern campaign of 1854, including the battle of Balaklava
(severely wounded), and siege of Sebastopol (Medal with two Clasps, Brevet of Major, Knight of the Legion of
Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
103 Lord Erroll served with the Rifle Brigade in the Eastern campaign of 1854, and was severety wounded at the
battle of Alma (Medal with Clasp, Brevet of Major, 5th Class of the Medjidic, and Turkish Medal).
104 Major Evans served with the 29th Regiment throughout the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, including the pas¬
sage of the Chenab, and battles of Chillianwallah and Goojerat (Medal’with two Clasps).
195 Major Fawcett served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 with the 50th Regt., including the battles of Alma and
Inkerman, and siege of Sebastopol (Medal with three Clasps, and Turkish Medal). Served with the 9th Lancers the
Indian campaign of 1857-59, commanded a Squadron at the battle of Budlekeserai and throughout the siege and
capture of Delhi (horse shot in repelling a sortie on 19th June); also with Greathed’s Column in the action of
Bolundshur (horse shot) and Allyghur, and was senior Officer of the Regt. in camp at Agra when the enemy
attacked, and commanded during the early part of the engagement, and in the action at Meraigunge ; present at
the relief of Lucknow by Lord Clyde, battle of Cawnpore on 6th Dec., and actions at Seraighat and Khuda-
gunge, and capture of M*eeangunge; commanded a Squadron at the siege of Lucknow from 2nd to 19th March,
and throughout the summer campaign in Oude and Rohilcund, including actions at Rhodamow and Altygunge,
capture of Bareilly, action at Shahjehanpore and pursuit to Mahomdee, and affair at Kumdakoti (Medal with two
Clasps, and a year’s service for Lucknow).
106 Major Fairtlough served with the 12th Regiment in the Kaffir war of 1852-53 (Medal).
107 Major Hon. Keith-Falconer served three years as a Midshipman, and was wounded in the boat action of
H.M.S. President and Eurydice against the Arab pirates in the River Augozha, east coast of Africa, 23rd Nov. 1847.
Served in the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 as Aide de Camp to Sir Richard England, including the battles of Inker-
man and Tchernaya, and siege of Sebastopol; was also with the Light Cavalry Brigade at Eupatoria (Medal
with two Clasps, Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).
108 Major Fanning served with the 64th Regiment in the Persian campaign of 1856-57, including the storm and
capture of Reshire, surrender of Bushire, night attack and battle of Kooshab, and bombardment of Mohumrah
(Medal with Clasp). Served in the N.W. Provinces of India in suppressing the mutiny in 1857-58; commanded a
Detachment in the action of Khugwa, present in the defence of Cawnpore and defeat of the Gwalior mutineers, and
actions of Kala Nuddee and Kerkeroulie, capture of Bareilly, affairs of Shahjehanpore, Bunnie, and Mahomdie ;
served in the Oude campaign of 1858-59 as Brigade Major of Brigadier Hale’s Force, and was present at the attack
and capture of the town and Fort of Sandee (Medal).
110 Major J. Finlay served with the 78th Highlanders in the Persian war in 1857, including the night attack and
battle of Kooshab, bombardment of Mohumrah, and expedition to Ahwaz (Medal with Clasp). Served in Bengal
with Havelock’s Column from its first taking the field in 1857, including the actions of Futtehpore, Aoung, Pandoo
Nuddee, Cawnpore, Onao, Buseerutgunge (first and second), and in the several actions leading to and ending
in the relief of the Residency of Lucknow and subsequent defence; with Outram’s Force at Alumbagh, including
the repulse of the numerous attacks and operations, ending in the final capture of Lucknow; the Rohilcund cam¬
paign in 1858, and capture of Bareilly (Medal with two Clasps, and a year’s service for Lucknow).
111 Major L. W. Fisher served in the 82nd Regiment during the suppression of the Indian mutiny in 1857-58 in
Oude and Rohilcund, and was present at the defence of the Jail at Shahjehanporo and affairs subsequent to its
relief (Medal). Served with the 40th Regiment in the New Zealand war of 1863-65, and was present at Waiari and
Orakau—severely wounded (Brevet of Major, and Medal).
112 Major FitzGerald served in the Anglo-Spanish Legion during 1835-37; was severely wounded in the action of
5th May rear St. Sebastian, and has two Crosses and a Medal for his conduct and services. Served also in the New
Zealand war in 1864-65 (Medal).
113 Major Richard Fletcher commanded the Detachments of the ist and 3rd West India Regiments which destroyed
the town of Maageah, AVestern Africa, in May 1855, but with severe loss, owing to the overwhelming force of
the'enemy.
114 Major L. Forbes served as Adjutant of the 2nd Bengal Nativ e Infantry in the Sonthal campaign in 1856. Com¬
manded an Irregular Regiment in the Indian rebellion (Medal), in five minor affairs in the Etawa district in 1858, the
total force under his command in the field being 10 Companies of Infantry, 2 Squadrons of Cavalry, and 3 guns. Com¬
manded the Troops engaged in the operations at Neemree and Gurrah Kasdar, leadingto the occupation of Burhee in
August 1858. for which he received the “high commendation” of the Governor General of India. Commanded the
Troops engaged in the action of Hurchundpore, which was mentioned in General orders as ‘“a very gallant and suc¬
cessful attack,” and for which he was thanked in the same general order by the Governor General, the service
characterized as “ a daring exploit, and marked by skill, courage, and determination.” Recorded while a subaltern
for prospective promotion to the Brevet rank of Major as soon as he should attain the rank of Captain, on Lord
Clyde’s recommendation.
115 Major J. Forster served with the 6th Dragoon Guards in the Crimea from the 26th July 1855, including the
siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal). Was second in command of the Wing of the
Carabineers before Delhi; thence he accompanied General Showers’ Column and was at the affair of Kuttwalee
when General Penny was killed,—on this occasion he led a charge against a band of fanatic Ghazees and was
wounded in seven places, losing a portion of one hand (Medal with Clasp, and Brevet of Major).
116 Major J. P. B. Forster served with the 4th Regiment in the Crimea from March 1855, including the siege and
fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal).
117 Major Forsyth served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 with the 57th Regiment, including*the battles of
Balaklava and Inkerman, siege of Sebastopol, capture of the Quarries, attacks of the Redan on the 18th June (with
the storming Column), and on the 8th September; also at Kinbourn (Medal with three Clasps, Brevet of Major,
Knight of the Legion of Honor, Sardinian and Turkish Medals).
118 Major C. M. Foster served with the 32nd Regiment in the Indian mutiny campaign in 1857-58, and was in
action with the rebel force at Chinhut on the 30th June 1857, and from that date engaged in the defence of the
Residency of Lucknow until his final relief by Lord Clyde on 24th November,—was severely wounded during the
siege and mentioned in despatches by Sir John Inglis and the Governor General; was subsequently engaged in the
defeat of the Gwalior rebels at Cawnpore on 6th Dec. 1857 (Medal with Clasp, Brevet of Major, and grant of a year’s
service for Lucknow).
118t Major T. J. Francis served with the 16th Lancers at the actions of Buddiwal and Aliwal, and as Aide de Camp
to Sir Joseph Thackwell at Sobraon (Medal and one Clasp). He served’also the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49. in¬
cluding the passage of the Chenab at Ramnuggur, and battles of Chillianwallah and Goojerat (Medal with two
Clasps).
120 Major Gavin served with the 16th Lancers during the campaign in Affghanistan under Lord Keane, including
the siege and capture of Ghuznee (Medal). He was also present at the battle of Maharajpore, 9th Dec. 1843 (Bronze Star).
