53 War Services of the Colonels.
China, and was present at the destruction of the batteries of Amoy, in H. M. S. Blonde, in
1840 ; at the capture of the forts of theBoeca Tigris, and subsequent operations in the Canton
River ; at the storm and capture of the heights of Canton ; attack and captures of Amoy,
Chusan (second operation), Chinhae, Chapoo, Woosung, Shanghae, and Chin Kiang Foo, and
demonstration before Nankin (Medal).
62 Colonel Eld served with the 90th Regiment during the Kaffir war of 1846-47 (Medal).
63 Colonel Land served as Adjutant to the Royal Marine Battalion at D’Jouni, and was
present at the Bombardment of St. Jean d’Acre (Medal and Clasp for Syria, and Turkish Medal).
64 Colonel Mitford was employed on the coast of Syria during the whole of the operations
against the Egyptians ; he landed and served with the Battalion at the Camp d’Jouni, and was
present at the bombardment of St. Jean d’Acre. He has been presented with a Medal from
the Sultan, and has the War Medal with one Clasp.
65 Colonel James Watson served with the 14th Regt. at the siege and storming of Bhurt-
pore in 1825-26 (Medal). Also at the siege of Sebastopol from 10th Feb. to 1st April 1855
(Medal and Clasp, and Turkish Medal).
66 Sir Thomas Troubridge served the Eastern campaign of 1854 with the 7 th Fusiliers, and
was very severely wounded at the battle of Inkerman—both feet amputated (Medal and Clasps,
4th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
67 Colonel Forbes served with the 91st Regiment in the last Kaffir war (Medal).
68 Colonel Norcott served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55; held the independent com¬
mand of a wing of the 2nd Batt. Rifle Brigade at the battle of the Alma—horse killed—
(markedly named in the first Dispatch), as also before Sebastopol on its first bombardment.
From 1 st February 1855 he commanded the 1st Battalion engaged in the siege operations (Medal
and Clasps, Brevets of Lt.Col. and Colonel, Aide de Camp to the Queen, CIS., Officer of the
Legion of Honor, Sardinian and Turkish Medals, 3rd Class of the Medjidie).
69 Colonel Lysons served in Canada during the rebellion in 1838-39, including the actions
of St. Denis and St. Eustache. Was honourably mentioned in Dispatches and General Orders
on the occasion of the wreck of the transport Premier on 4th November 1843 and promoted in
consequence. Served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55; was present at the battles of Alma
and Inkerman, the minor affairs of Bulganac and Mackenzie’s Farm, capture of Balaklava, and
throughout the whole siege of Sebastopol; led the main column of the attack on the Redan
by the Light Division on the 18 th June, and commanded a Brigade in the latter part of the action
(slightly wounded); was engaged in the final assault of the Redan on the 8th September
(severely wounded); commanded the 2nd Brigade Light Division from October 1855 to the
end of the war (Medal and Clasps, Brevet of Colonel, CB., Officer of the Legion of Honor,
Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 3rd Class of the Medjidie).
70 Lord Longford served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, as Assistant Adjutant General,
up to the 24th June 1855, after which as Adjutant General, including the battles of Alma,
Balaklava, and Inkerman, and siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal and Clasps, CB., Officer
of the Legion of Honor, Commander 2nd Class St. Maurice and St. Lazarus, 3rd Class of
the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
71 Colonel Tudor served as Aide-de-Camp to General Grey, commanding the left wing of
the army of Gwalior, in the action of Punniar, 29 Dec. 1843 (Medal). Also served the Sutlej
campaign of 1845-6, as Aidede Camp to the same General, commanding 5th Division of the Army.
72 Colonel James Graham joined the 54thRegt. in Burmah, as a volunteer, in Dec. 1824, and
was present at the carrying of the entrenched Fords of the Mahattee River, 27th March, and at
the attack on the fortified heights of Arracan, 29th March 1825; at the latter he was wounded
in the side and face: has received the Medal and Clasp for Ava. In July 1855 a Medical
Board pronounced him as “totally unfit for service in the field;” but in consideration of the
nature of his past services he was specially promoted to a Lieut.-Colonelcy, and allowed to re¬
tire upon the full pay of that rank.
73 Colonel Wetherall served in Can ail a during the rebellions of 1837-38, 1838-39, and was
present in the actions of St. Charles, St. Eustache, and Pointe Oliviere. Was shipwrecked with
the Royal Regt. in the transport “ Premier.” Served in the Crimea as Assistant Quarter Master
General aud was present at the battles of Alma, Balaklava, and Inkerman, the siege and fall of
Sebastopol. Served at Kertch as Deputy Quarter Master General of the Turkish Contingent.
Was subsequently Director General of Land Transport in the Crimea, and was charged with
the reorganization of that force (Medal and four Clasps, CB., Knight of the Legion of Honor,
3rd Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Served as Deputy Q. M. General to the forces
in China in 1857. Served in India in the Mutiny of 1857-58; was Chief of the Staff of the
Central India field force and present at Koonch, Muttra, Golowlee 20th and 22nd May (horse
shot, mentioned by Sir Hugh Rose for gallant conduct in a charge of the Camel Corps), and
Calpee. Commanded South Oude field force in the campaign of 1858; and commanded the
force at the attack and capture of the intrenched camp of Rampore Kussea on 3rd Nov. (22
guns taken), and the subsequent operations of the campaign (Medal and Clasp).
74 Colonel Strange served with the 26th Regt. on the China expedition (Medal), and was
present at the defence of Ningpo, at Tscke, Chapoo, Woosung, Shanghae, Chinkiangfoo, and
Nankin.
75 Colonel Lake was transferred from the Madras Engineers to the Royal Army as a
Lieut.Colonel Unattached for his services at the defence of Kars {CB., 2nd Class of the
Medjidie, and Officer of the Legion of Honor).
76 Colonel Payne served with the Royal Marine Brigade in the Crimea and at the surrender
of Kinbourn in 1855 (Medal, and Turkish Medal).
