25 War Services of the General Officers.
relief of Luoknow on 25th Sept. (wounded in left knee and right thigh) ; commanded the right Column at the
storming of the Hirn Khannah on i6th Nov., and was thanked in division orders by General Havelock. Was
with General Outram's Force at the Alumbagh from 26th Nov. 1857 to gth March 1858—commanded the 84th up to
24th Jan.; present at the fall of Lucknow; accompanied General Lugard's Force, and present at the relief of
Azimghur; proceeded with Brigadier Douglas's column in pursuit of the rebel chief Koer Sing, and present in the
actions of 17th and 20th April (mentioned in despatches, CJS., and Brevets of Major and Lt.Colonel, Medal with
two Clasps, and grant of a year's service for Lucknow).
2™> Major General Gordon served in the campaigns against the Kaffir tribes of South Africa in 1834-35 (Medal).
Also as Assistant Engineer during 1S37 and 38, on the eastern frontier of the Cape Colony; and empIo3-ed under
Colonel Lewis, commanding Roj-al Engineers, to execute a confidential survey (trigonometrical and statistical) on that
frontier. Served in the Indian campaign of 1857-58, commanding the 75th Regt. dm-ingthe capture of Dellii from the
iSth Sept. and was wounded on the i8th leading the assault on the Hubshee-ka-Phatuk; planned and carried out
the forward movement of the right attack within the city, surprising and capturing the Burn Bastion at its gorge
on the evening of the 19th, retaining it under a constant fire until the next morning, when the enemy evacuated Delhi.
Proceeded with Greathed's Column and commanded the Regt. in the actions of Bolundshuhur, Aligurh, Akbarabad,
Agra., and Kanoj, advance into Oude and minor affairs ending in the relief of Lucknow; subsequently with the
Oude field force in front of the city until 14th Feb.—specially mentioned in Outram's despatch for "judgment and
coolness " in defending the left advanced outpost of the Camp during a night attack nvade by a very large force of
the enemy on the 16th Jan., which he repulsed with severe loss (Medal with two Clasps, and Brevet of Lt.Colonel).
*"' Major General Bajaios served in the Crimea from Nov. 1854 as Captain in the Mounted Staff Corps, and after¬
wards as Military Magfstrate of the Army (Medal with Clasp for Sebastopol, 5th Class of the Medjidie, Turkish Medal,
and Brevet of Major). Served in India during the mutiny, and commanded the force consisting of 2 guns Horse Artil¬
lery, 150 men of 8th Regt., and a detachment of Punjauh Cavalry, which surjjrised the garrison and secured the fort
and magazine of Phillour, on the Sutlej, 12th and 13th May 1857." Served wah the 8th Regt. at the siege of Delhi,
and^ was dangerously wounded at the assault of the city, leg amputated (Brevet of Lt.Colonel, Medal with Clasp).
^"^ Major General H. B. Norman served with the lothRegt.in the Sutlej campaign of 1845-46, and was present at the
battle of Sobraon (Medal). He served also in the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, and was present during the whole of
the siege operations against Mooltan and surrender of the fortress, including the affair of the 9th Sept., storming the
enemy's strongly-entrenched position before Mooltan, and commanded the Troops in the ad\anced batteries of the
Camp durina- the action of Soorjkoond; afterwards present at the battle of Gooierat (Medal with two Clasps).
Commanded two Companies when the Sepoys mutinied at Benares on 4th June 1857; commanded the selected
marksmen of the Regiment with the Jounpore Field Force, including the actions of Chanda, Sultanpore, and
Dhowraha; present with the Regiment at the repulse of the enemy near Amerpoore, siege and cajiture of Lucknow
including the storming of the Emaumbara an(l the Kaisabagh; commanded the Regiment at the passage of the
Tonse and forcing the enemy's position near Azimghur; present in the skirmish near Birheea, and at the defeat of
the enemy at Jugdespore and subsequently re;)ulsed them from that post; commanded the Regiment in the opera¬
tions on the 26th May, 2nd and 4th June; was several times mentioned in despatclies, and promoted Brevet
Major and Brevet Lt.Colonel (Medal with Clasp, and CB.).
^' Major General Stapylton served in the 13th Light Infantry the campaigns of 1840 and 42 in Affghanistan, and
was present at the storming of the Khoord Cabool Pass, affair of Tezeen, forcing the JugduUuck Pass, reduction of
the fort of Mamoo Khail, heroic defence of Jellalabad, and sorties on the 14th Nov. and ist Dec. 1841, nth March,
24tb March, and ist April 1842; the general action with defeat of the besieging force under Akbar Khan before
Jellalabad on the 7th April, the storming of the JugduUuck heights, general action at Tezeen, and recapture of
Cabool, for which he has a Medal, as also for Jellalabad.
'■"^ MajorGeneral Vialls served in the Eastern campaign of iS54with the 95th Regt., including the battle of Inker-
man (severely wounded), siege of Sebastopol, and sortie on 26th October (Medal with two Clasps, Brevet Major,
and Turkish Medal). Served also in the Indian mutiny campaign in 1858, including the siege and capture of
Kotah, battle of Kota ke Serai, general action resulting in the capture of Gwalior, siege and capture of Pouree
(five times mentioned in despatches, Medal with Clasji).
^"5 Major General Hon. Percy Feilding served the Eastern campaign of 1854 as Brigade Major to the Brigade of
Guards at the battle of Alma (mentioned in despatches) and on the Staff of the 1st Division at the battles of Bala-
klava and Inkerman (severely wounded), and siege of Sebastopol (Brevet of Major, Medal with four Clasps, Knight
of the Legion of Honour, 5t,h Class of the Medjidie, Turkish Medal, and CB.).
^"^ Major General Aplin served with the 28th Regiment throughout the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the
battles of Alma and Inkerman, siege and fall of Sebastopol, and affair in the Cemeterj-, Wounded while in com¬
mand of the Sharpshooters of the 28th Regt. (Medal with three Clasps, Brevet of Major, Knight of the Legion of
Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
^"^ Major General Hood was employed in the year 1846 as Secretary on a special public mission to the Argentine
Republic to settle the difference on the part of the combined Powers of England and France, and General Rosas, the
Governor of Buenos Ayres. Served in the Crimea with the Buffs from the ist May 1855 to ttie 8th January 1856,
including the siege and fall of SebastO]iol (wounded), and commanded the ladderparty of the Buffs at the assaiUt of
the Redan on 8th Sept.—wounded; commanded the Kogiment from 13th Sept. to 27th Dec. 1855, and marched it into
the Karabelnaia on 17th Sept. with Colours, &c., these being the only English colours that entered Sebastopol
(Medal with Clasp, Brevet of Major, 5th (Mass of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
2'* Major G(.neriil C. C. Eraser served as Orderly t)fHce'r to Brigadier Campbell at the affair of Munseata near
Allahabad, on the 5th Jan. 1858, and subsecpiently with the 7th Hussars in the Indian mutiny campaign from Feb. to
July 1858, and from Dec. 1858 to March 1859, ^^'^ ™s present at the affair of Meengunge, siege and capture of
Lucknow,affairs of Barree and Sirsee (horse wounded), action of Nawabgunge (severely wounded whilst leading
a squadron against a body of Gazzie fanatics, mentioned in Sir Hope Grant's despatch for "most conspicuous
gallantry," Brevet of Major), throughout the Trans-Gogra campaign, including the affair near Churda and pursuit,
taking the Fort of Mecjeedia, attack on Bankee with pursuit to the Raptee (Victoria Cross for " cons]ricuous and
cool-gallantry"), advance into Nepaul and affair at Sitkaghat (Medal with Clasp). Served in the Abyssinian
campaign in 1868 as Commandant at Head Quarters and in charge of the outposts, and was present at the action
of Arogee and capture of Magdala (mentioned in despatches " for unceasing vigilance," CK., and Medal). Has
been awarded the Royal Humane Society's Medal of the First Class.
-'*t Major General Ertgar served the campaign of 1842 in Affghanist.an with the 31SI Regiment, including the actions
of Mazcrna, Tezeen, and Jugdulluck, the occupation of Cabool, and the difft-reni engagements leailuig to it (.Medal).
Served in the Crimea from nth June 1S55, as Brigade Major of 2nd Brigade ist Division from 19th August 1S55 to
17th January 1S56, and was present at the siege and fall of Sebastopol and attacks on the iSth June and 8th Sep¬
tember (Modal with Clasp, Brevet of Major, Knight of the Les^rion of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish
Medal). Served throughout the campaign in the north of China in tS6o, and was present at the action of Sinho
and storming of Tangku (Medal with Clasp for the Tiiku Forts, and Brevet of Lt.Colonel) Commanded the 31SC
Resriment in the oneratioiis against the Taeping rebels in 1862, including the recapture of Khading.
2™ Major General Hon. S. J. G. Calthorpe served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 'is Ai'lc de Camp to Lord Raglan,
including the battles of Alma, Balaklava, and Inkerman, affairs of Bulganak and M'Kenzie's Farm, and .siege of
Sebastopol (MedalwithfourClasps, Brevet of Major, Kuight of the Legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and
Turkish Medal).
*'" Major Geueral Re.imond served with the 6ist Ragt throughout the Punjaub campaign of i84?-49, and was pre¬
sent at tiie passigo of the Glienab and in the battles of Sa loolapore, Chiliianwallah, and Goojerat, and with the
Field Force ill jiursuit of the enemy to the Khyber Pass (Medal with two Clasps). Expedition into the Eusufzie
Country, and skirmishes near Saggow and Zoom imilie on nth and 14th Dec. 1849. Commanded the flank Com¬
panies 6ist Regiment with the force under Sir Colin Campbell at the forcing of the Kohat Pass in Feb. 1850 (Medal
with Clasp). Commanded Detachment 6ist Regiment vvhicu repulsed tlie attack of the mutinous Sepoj s on the
magazine at Ferozepore on 13th Ma.v 1857, and was severely wounded. Served at the siege (from 14th Aug.)
assault and capture of Delhi (Medal nitii Clasp, ami CJJ).
2" Major General Bulwer served the Eastern campaign of 1854 with the 23rd Fusiliers, including the battle of
Alma and siege of Sebastopol (Medal with two Clasps, anil Turkish Medal). Served in the Indian mutiny of 1857-59,
ncluding the siege and capture of Lucknow, and operations across the Goonitee under Outram. Commanded a
