(Medal with four Clasps, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Served in Central India in 1858-59, and was
present at the action of Boordah (mentioned in despatches. Medal).
'*5 Major General H. R. Browne served with the 9th Regt. in the Crimea from 27th Nov. 1854, including the siege
and fall of Sebastopol, and assaults of the i8th June and 8th Sept. Served as Aide do Camp and subsequently as
Major oi'Brigade to Major General Ridley, ist Division, during the latter part of the campaign (Medal with Clasp,
Brevet of Major, Knight of the Legion of Honor, sth Class of the Medjidio, and Turkish Medal). Proceeded with
Sir Hope Grant's expedition from India in 1860-61 to China. Proceeded in Command of Forces sent to Japan for
protection of Treaty Ports in 1864, and received the thanks of Her Majesty's Ministers for services in that country
and also the approbation of the General Officer in command of the Forces in China.
'"'^ Major General Kirby was specially attached to the Head Quarters of the Army under Lord Clyde, as Assistant
Quarter Master General, dui-ing the campaign in Oude of 1858-59, until the final termination of the war (Brevet of
Lt.Colonel, Medal).
'*' Major General Sayer ser\'ed with the ist Dragoon Gds. in the Crimean campaign from 16th Aug. 1855, including
the siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal). Commanded the Regiment in China
throughout the campaign of i860, including the action of Sinho, and those of the i8th and 21st Sept., also the sur¬
render of Pekin (mentioned in despatches, CB., Medal with Two Clasps).
"" Major General A. C. Robertson served in the Anglo-Sp.anish Legion from July 1835 to June 1837. Received a
Medal for the action of 5th May 1837 ; the Cross of the ist Class of San Fernando for the actions of the 15th and i6th
March 1S37 ; aud another Medal tor the storming of Iran, 17th May following; severely wounded in the fece by a
splinter in the general action on the Heights of Ametza, ist Oct. 1836. Served with the 8th Regiment at the siege
of Delhi in 1857, including repulse of sorties on 9th, i4tli, and 18th July (commanded the Regiment), and com¬
manded Detachments of Sth and 6i8t Regiments at the capture of four guns in front of the Advanced Piquet on
i2th August. Acted as D.A.Q.M. Gen. to Seaton's Column in December, including affairs of GHngareo, Putti.ila,
and Mynpoorie. Present during oioerations from 2nd to 22nd March 1858 resulting in the occupati(jii of Lucknow
in the capacitj' of Deputy Judge Advocate General to the Army in the field (Brevets of Major and Lt.Colonel,
Medal with two Clasps).
'*^ Major General Macdonald served the Eastern campaign of 1854 as Aide de Camp to General Pennefather (in¬
cluding the battles of the Alma (severely wounded) and Inkerman (severel.y wounded), and siege of Sebastopol (Medal
with three Clasps, Brevet of Major, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
'* Major General R. "White served in the Eastern campaign of 1854 with the 17th Lancers, including the affair of
Bulganak, battles of Alma and Balaklava, and siege of Sebastopol. At Balaklava he led the S(|uadron of direction,
was severely wounded, and had his horse shot (Medal with three Clasps, Brevet of Major, 5th Class of the Medjidie,
and Turkish Medal). Proceeded with his Regiment to India in 1857, and served throughout the campaign in
Central India in 1858-59, part of the time in command of a, Flying Column, including the action of Barodo (Medal).
'^^ Major General Spurgin served with the 1st Madras Fusiliers m the Burmese war of 1852-53, including the taking
of Pegu, and its subsequent defence (Medal with Clasp for Pegu). Served in sup))ression of the mutiny in Bengal in
1857-58 ; coiniuanded the troops proceeding by steamer in July 1857 from AUahaljad to Cawnpore covering the right
of Havelock's Column and engaging the enemy on two occasions, on the tirst landed his force I'epnlsed the rebels
and captured their 6-poundergim; was Stnif Officer to General Neill at Cawnpore, afterwards Brigade Major to the
1st Brigade and was with it tluring its advance and entry into Lucknow on 25th Sept., defence of the Residency and
subsequent operations at the Alumbagh under Outrain; also served asa Brigade Major .attlie c.ipturo of Kaiserbagh,
and capture of Lucknow, received the thanks of the Governor General in (jouncil. Brevets of Major and Lt.Colonel
(Medal with two Clasps, a year's service for Lucknow, and CSI.).
''■'^ Major General A. W. Murray commanded the centre division of the Brigade, and was engaged at the storming
and capture of the stockades of Sabajee on the ist June 1853. Commanded the British Troops on an expedition up the
River Gambia in Feb. 1861, which stormed and destro.yed the stockaded Mandingo towns of Swarracunda, Carawan,
Kinty Cunda, and Saba, and compelled the king of Baddeboo to make peace.
i'2 Major General Gamble seiwcdin Tm'key in 1854-55, s^n^l with the 4th Regt. in the Crimean campaign from May
1855, including the siege and fall of Scbastopol (Medal with Clasp, Brevet of Major, and Turkish Medal). He served
as Deputy Quarter Master General (head of the department) in Ne^v Zealand from 1861 to 1867 and during the whole
of the operations of the war of 1863-66, including the actions at Katikara andKoheroa, assault and capture of the
fortified position of Rangiriri {CB.), advance through and occui>ation of the "Waikato country—with actions at
Haerini and Orakau. At the conclusion of the Waikalo camp.aign Sir Duncan Cameron, commp.nding the Army
in the Field, in his despatch of the 4th March 1864 to the Secretary of State for War, after thanking individually
the Officers of his Staff, including Colonel Gamble, adds :—"I beg more particularly to recommerKl Colonel Gamble,
Deputy Quarter Master General, to your Lordship's favourable notice, as to this Officer's ability, zeal, and unceasing
attention to his important duties, I am chiefly indebted for the success of these operations." He w.as also present
at the subsequent operations at Tauranga, and at the Gate Pah, and in the campaign of 1865 in the Wanganui
country, including the action at Nukumaru, aii'air of Kakaramea; and again in the campaign under Sir Trevor
Chute, at the assault and capture of Otapawa, at Waikoko, and in the arduous forest march round Mount Egmont
(repeatedly mentioned in desiiatchos, rank of Colonel, and Medal). The 3rd Class of the Medjidie has been conferred
on him by the Viceroy of Egypt in acknowledgment of his services as Governor of His Highness' son, Prince
Hassan, (.luring his stay in England in 1868-69.
i'-** Major General Milman was present in the action at ilarigunge and at the relief of Lucknow in Nov. 1857. Com¬
manded a Detachment during the advance on the Dilkoosha and Martiniere (mentioned in despatches. Brevet of
Lt.Colonel, and grant of a 3'ear's .service) ; served with the 5th Fusiliers in Outram's force at the Alumbagh in all
the operations of the succeeding months, including the cajiture of Lucknow; also in the Oude cami^aign of 1858-59,
including the capture of the Forts of Shunkerjiore, Amatee, an<l Oomrea, and action of Doundcrkeira, where he com¬
manded the advance guard (Medal with two Clasps, and CIJ). In 1848, when stationed at the Mauritius, he was upset
in a boat off Mahebourg, together with five others, whose lives were saved by his skill and courage in swimming,
for which the Royal Humane Society conferred on him its Gold Medal.
'^^ Lord Clarina served with the 95th Regiment in the Crimea from the 22nd Nov. 1854, including the siege and
fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, Brevet of Major, Knight of the Legion of Honor, Turkish Medal, and 5th Class
cf the Medjidie). Served also in the Indian mutiny camiiaign in 1858, including the siege and capture of Kotah,
battle of Kota ke Serai, general action resulting in the cai)ture of Gwalior, siege and cajiture of Pouree (men¬
tioned in despatches. Medal with Clasp).
'^f" Major General j. Ross served with the RifleBriga.de in the Eastern campaign,including the battles of Alma and
Inkermaii, and siege of Sebastopol, until February 1855 (Medal with throe Clasps, Brevet of Major, 5th Class of the
Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Served also in the Indian cam])aign of 1857-58, including the action of Cawnpore,
siege and capture of Lucknow. Commanded the Camel Corps at the capture of Calpee and during the subsequent
campa.ign in Central India (mentioned in despatches. Brevet of Lt.Colonel, CJI., Medal with two Clasjis). Served
with the Ritie Brigade in the North "Wes-t Froutier of India campaigns of 1863-64 (Meoal with Clasp). Commanded
the Bengal troops during the operations in the Malay Peninsula in 1875-76 (mentioned in General Orders of the
Government of India). Commanded the Indian Expeditionary Foi-ce which was sent 10 the Mediterranean in 1878.
"' Major General W. F. Brett commanded the 54th Kegt. during the burning of ihe steam transjiort SnruA Sands a,t
sea on nth Nov. 1857. The conduct of the 54tli on that occasion was the sulijcct of a genera! order dated Horse
Guards, 27th Feb. 1858, in which Lt.Colonel Brett is mentioned as being " entitled to high praise f(n' his conduct
throughout" under circumstances " the most alarming and dangerous in which soldiers can be placed" (Brevet
of Lt.Colonel, and presented by the Royal Humane Society with a Silver Medal and vote of thanks tor his services
on the occasion). Served in India during the suppression of the mutiny from January 1858, and commanded a
Flying Column on the Nepaul Frontier ; this force received the special acknowledgments of the Governor General
of India for "energy and zeal displayed for the period so employed " (Medal).
"* Major General Hawley served with the 89th Regiment in the Crimea from the 31st Dec. 1854, including the siege
andfall of Sebastopol and attacks of the i8th June and Sth September. Served as D. A.Q.M. General at B.alaklava
during 1856 (Medal with Clasp, Brevet of Major, Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of ttio Medjidie).
I''''-' Major General Willis was present with Gen. Haveloek's Field Force in the actions of Oontio and Busccrut Gunge
on 29th July 1857 ; commanded the 84th Regiment in the actions of Buseerut Gunge on the 5th Aug., Boorbeake
Chowkeo on 12th Aug., at Bithoor on the i6th Aug., at Mungawar on 21st Sept., at Alumbagh on 23rd Sept., and
