including the battles of Alma and Inkerman, and siege of Sebastopol—severely woumled in the Trenches on the
16th of April (mentioned in despatches, Medal with three Clasps, Brevets of Major and Lt.Colonel, Knight of the
legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
'^^ Major General Hepburn served in the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the battle of Alma (severely
wounded), siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with two Clasps, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
1^^ Major General Best served with the loth Regiment in the Puujaub campaign of 1848-49, including the whole
of the siege operations before Mooltan and surrender of the fortress; was afterwards present and slightly wounded
in the leg at the battle of Goojerat (Medal with two Clasps).
'^* Major General D. Anderson was present with the 22nd Regiment at the taking and destruction of the villages
in the Boree Valley in the Peshawur district in November 1853 (Medal with Clasp).
1^' Major General Wilkinson served with the 42nd Highlanders in the Crimea up to Oct. 1854, including the
battle of Alma and siege of Sebastopol (Medal with two Clasps, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
Served the campaign of 1857-58 against the mutineers in India, including the action at Khodagunj, siege and fall
of Lucknow, attack on the Fort of Rooyah, action of Allygunge, and capture of Bareilly (Medal with Clasp).
1^' Major General Radcliffe served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 with the 20th Uegt., including the battles of
Alma (as Aide de Camp to acting Brigadier General Horn), Balaklava, and Inkerman, siege of Sebastopol, and
affair of the 18th June (Medal with Clasps, Brevet of Major, Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of the
Medjidie). Served in the Indian campaign of 1857-58, and was present at the actions of Chanda, Unieerpore, and
Sultanpore, and at the siege and capture of Lucknow—wounded (sabre-cut in right hand) and twice mentioned in
despatches (Medal with Clasp, and CB.).
^'^ Major General Pakenham served with the 30th Regiment in the Eastern campaign of 1854, and was slightly
and also severely wounded at the battle of Alma (Medal with Clasp, Brevets of Major and Lt,Colonel, Sardinian
and Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of the Medjidie.
i*" Major General W. Payn served with the 53rd Regiment in the Sutlej campaign of 1845-46, including the affair
of Buddiwal and actions of Aliwal and Sobraon (Medal and Clasp). Punjaub campaign of 1849, including the
battle of Goojerat (Medal with Clasp), campaign of 1851-52 against the hill tribes on the Peshawur i'rontier. Served
in the Crimea in command of a Regiment of the Turkish Contingent, and was jiresent with that Force from June
1855 until its disbandment in May 1856 (Brevet of Major, Turkish Mednl, and 4th Class of the Medjidie).
Served in the Indian campaign of 1857-58, including the actions of the 2dth 27th and 28th Nov. at Cawupore,
under General Windliam, battle of Cawiipore on 6tli Dec. and pursuit of the Gwalior Contingent to Serai Ghat,
action of Khodagunge and entry into Futtehghur, affair of Shumshabad, storm and capture ofMeangunge, in
command of the left attack, siege and capture of Lucknow, and affair of Koorsie; commanded the 53rd through¬
out the hot weather campaign and passage of the Goomtee and occupation of Sultanpore, present with the Regi¬
ment at the passage of the Gogra at Fyzabad on 25th Nov., action of Toolsepore. and minor affairs (mentioned
five times in despatches. Brevet of Lt.Colouel, CB., Medal with Clasp).
1*1 Major General T. Ross commanded a detached force on the Nepaul frontier in 1859 ; drove the rebels from the
plains of Tilawara where there was a largo Bazar, and next da3- attacked them in the Jungle of Pipurea, the whole
rebel army in consequence retired to Botoul, where they were cut up b3- SirR. Kelly—for general services on the
frontier was highly complimented by the Commander in Chief and Sir R. Kelly (Medal).
'♦^ Major General Weare served with the 32nd Regiment the Punjaub campaign of 1848, including the first siege
operations before Mooltan (Medal with Clasp). Served the Eastern campaign of 1854 as D.A. Adj.General at Head
Quarters, including the affliir of Bulganak and battle of Alma (severely wounded, mentioned in despatches). In 1855
he served at the siege of Sebastopol, and was appointed A.Q.M. General (Medal with iwo Clasps, Brevets of Major
and Lt.Colonel, Sai-dinian and Turkish Medals, and 5th Class of the itedjidie). Commanded the 50th Regiment
during the New Zealand wars from 1863 to 1866, including the assault and capture of Rangiawhia on 21st Feb. 1864
(mentioned in despatches); the repulse of the enemy's attack on the Camp at Nukumarn on 24th Jan. 1865 (men¬
tioned in despatches, and Cli.). Commanded a Force of 1200 Cavalry, Artillery, and Infantry at Nukumaru and
Waitotora, moving in conjunction with the force under Sir Duncan Cameron; also the I'ield Force in its advance
into the enemy's country, for some time during the absence of the Brigadier General, including the action of Kaka-
ramea. Commanded the Jlovable Column formed for keeping open the district in 1865-66, and with that Column
opened the road to Taranaki until mot by the force from that district (Medall.
'** Major General H. M. Hamilton served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 f^s Deputy Assistant Quarter Master
General and as Assistant Quarter Master General from Oct. 1855, including the battle of Alma, capture of Balaklava,
Biege and fall of Sebastopol (mentioned in despatcliCS, Medal with three Clasps, Brevets of Major and Lt.Colonel,
5th Class of the Medjidie. and Turkish Medal). Commanded the 12th Regiment during the New Zealand war of
1863-66 ; was present with the forces under Sir Duncan Cameron throughout the AVaikato campaign and until the
termination of hostilities under Sir Trevor Chute. Commanded an Kxpeditionary Force from Te Rore to the sur¬
rounding district; occupied and destroyed the strongly fortified positions of Pateranga and Piko Piko, and other
strongholds between Te Rore and Ragland ; subsequently commanded the troops in the East Coast District, and
made several expeditions against the enemy, destroying the villages of Patatere, Whaiwuatawhatii, Irihanga, and
Whakamaraina, eventually driving out all hostile natives, and establishing tranquillity in this hitherto very
disturbed ijart of the country (Medal, and CB.).
i« Lord Chelmsford served with the Grenadier Guards in the Crimea from the 31st May 1855. including the siege
and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, Brevet of Major, Sardinian and Turkish Me"dals, and 5th Class of the
Medjidie). Served with the 95th Regiment in the Indian campaign (Medal). Served in the Abyssinian campaign
in 1868 as Deputy Adjutant General of the Exjieditionary Force, and was present at the capture of Magdala
(mentioned in despatches for " great ability and untiring energy," CB., and Medal). Servedin command of the
British forces in the Knfir war of 1878, and in the Zulu war of 1S79, being present at the engagements of Gingin-
dhlovu and Ulundi (.Medal with Cln.sp, and OCB.).
'■" Major General Harrison served with the loth Hussars in the Crimean campaign from 17th April to 5th Aug. 1855,
including the capture of Tchorgaun and siege of Sebastopol (Metlal with Clasp, 5th Class of the Medjiche, and Turkish
Medal).
'*" Major General Hon. A. G. C. Chichester served with the 6th Regiment in the Kaffir war, in 1847 (Medal).
'■" Major General Stratton served in the Indian campaign of 1858 ; commanded the 6th Regt. and a body of drafts
in the attack on the rebels on the nth May, and in other operations in the Jugdespore Jungle (Medal).
15" Major General W. H. Seymour served with the 68thLight Infantry dm'ing the Crimean campaign of 1854-55,
including the battles of Alma, Balaklava, and Inkerman,' and siege of Sebastopol (Medal with four Clasps, and
Turkish Medal). Accompanied the 2nd Dragoon Guards to India, aiid served in the campaigns of 1858-59, including
the action of Nusserutpore, siege and capture of Lncknow (charger wounded), and subsequent operations, action
of Nawabgunge (in command of three squadrons of the Regiment), and reoccupation of Fyzabad. Commanded the
Regiment throughout the Oude campaign, including the action of Jamo (wounded), assault and capture of Binvah,
and Trans-Gogra affairs at Bungaon (Gazetted Brevet Major on 20th July 1858, frequently mentioned in despatches.

151 Sir William Russell served in the Indian campaign from Feb. 1858 to March 1859, and was present at the re¬
pulse of the enemy's attack on the Alumbagh, siege and capture of Lucknow (Brevet of Lt.Colonel). Commanded the
7th Hussars at tlie affairs of Bairee and Sirsee, action of Nawabgunge, occupation of ]'\yzabad, passage of the
Goomtee at Sultanpore, throughout the Byswarra campaign, including the affairs of Paniloo Nnddee, Paleeghat,
Hyderghur, and pursuit of Benhi Madho's Force to the Goomtee; also the Trans-Gogra campaign, including the
affair near Churda and pursuit, taking the Fort of Meejeedia, attack on Bankec with pursuit to the Raptee, advance
into Nepaul and affair of Sitkaghat (several times mentioned in despatches, CB., Medal with Clasp).
153 Sir Frederick FitzWy gram served in the Crimea with the 6th Dragoons, was present at the battle of Tchernaya
and fall of Sebiistopol (Medal with Clasp, ami Ti-rki.--h Medal).
