Chief Engineer at the siege and capture of Lucknow (mentioned, CB.). Commanded a brigade at the capture of
Gwalior. Defeated Tantia Topee at Joura-Alipore, capturing 25 guns (thanks of Parliament and KCB.)- When in
command of Ihe Gwalior divisii n bombaided and reduced the fort of Powrie in Aug. 1858. After live days' close nursuit
surprised and defeated with a squadron of the 14th Hussars Ferozesha's force at hanode (Medal with three
ClJisps, ^nd a year's service for Lucknow). Commanded the 2nd Division of the China expeditionary force in the cam¬
paign of 1860, Including the action of Sinho; present at Tanku (division in reserve); with his Division and the whole
of the Artilliry, in conjunction with the French Division of General Collineau, directed the operations ending in the
storming of the North Taku Fort; present at the advance upon and surrender ot Pekin (thanks uf Parliament, Medal
with two Clasps, promoted Major General for distinguished service, and appointed Military Member of the Council of
the Governor-General of Indial. Raised to the Peerage In 1868 for his eminent ser\'ices as Cominander in Chief of the
Abyssinian Expedilionary Force, also received the thanks of both Houses of Parliament, and nominatrd a GCB.
6 Sir Henry Durand served in the Aflghanistan campaign, headed the explosion parly and fired the train at Ghuznee
(Medal). Gwalior campaign of 18J/i-44, including the battle of Maharajpore (bronze star). Punjaub campaign of 1848-
49, includlni; the liatties of Chillianwallah and Goojerat (Medal with two Clasps, and Brevet of Major). As agent to the
Governor-General in Central India in 18.57, was present at the battle of Mundesore, siege and capture of Dhar, and
several minor offairs,—conduct reported by Earl Canning " to have been marked by great foresight and the soundest
judgment as well in military as in civil matters," and that " Colonel Durand saved our interests in India until support
could arrive " (Medal, CB., and Brevet ot Colonel).
y Colonel Strachey sened in the Sutlej campaign of 1845-46, on the staff of Sir Harry Smith at the battles of Aliwal
and Sobraon (mentioned In dispatches, Medal and Clasp).
12 Colonel Becher served the campaign of 1842 in Alfghanistan, including the forcing of the Khyber Pass (Medal),
Sutlej campaign in 1846, and severely wounded at the battle of Sobraon (Medal, and Brevet of Major). Mentioned in
dispatches for services in operations against the mutineers on the Hazarah frontier, and in operations on the Eusufzai
frontier in 1857 (Civil CB.).
14 Colonel Maxwell served with the Bundlekund field force and in affairs with insurgents near Jytepore in 1842,
Gwalior campaign of 1848-44, and battle of Puiiniar (bronze star). Served in Scinde in 1845 in the Hill campaign under
Sir Charles Napier. Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, was Brigade Major of Bengal Engiiieers at the second siege operations
before Mooltan and surrender of the fortress, and present at the battle of Goojerat (Medal with two Clasps, and Brevet
of Major).
15 Colonel Campbell served the Gwalior campaign of 1843.44 and was present at the battle of Maharajpore (Bronze
Star). Burmese war of 1852-53, Including the capture of Pegu and its first and second defence (Medal). Served at Agra
during the Indian rebellion and was present at the action with Nusserabad mutineers on 5lh July 1867 (Medal).
16 Lt.Colonel Lake served tlie Sutlej campaign of 1845-46, including the battles of Moodkee (wounded) and Aliwal
(Medal and Clasp). Piinjaub campaign of 1848 49; commanded the troops of the Nawab of Bhawulpore throughout the
siege operations before Mooltan (wounded), and present at the battle of Goojerat, and pursuit of the Seikhs and Affghani
(Medal with two Clasps, and Brevet of Major).

on both passages of the Ganges, at the subsequent actions leading lo and ending in the first relief of Lucknow, and at
the subsequent defence of the Residency—mentioned in dispatches for the skill with which he bridged the Ganges with
slender means and in the face of the enemy, and directed extraordinary countermining operations at Lucknow (Medal with
Clasp, Brevet of Major, CB., and a yeai's service").
