and Beloochistail under Lord Keane, including the stonn and capture of Gliuzneo (wounded)
and of Khelat (Medal for Ghuznee). Served with the 78th Highlandeis in the Persian war in
1857 ; commanded a Brigade in the night attack and battle of Kooshab (CB), and the 78th at
the bombardment of Mohumrah. Served with Havelock's column in 1857, present in the action
at Bithoor, commanded the Regt. in the several actions leading to and ending in the relief of the
Residency at Lucknow. Succeeded to the command of the 1st Brigade on the death of General
Neil on 25111 Sept. and held that command during the whole of the operations throughout tlie
defence of the Residency, also for two months with Outram's force at Alumbagh including the
repulse of several attacks, and the operations ending in the final capture of Lucknow (frequently
mentioned in Dispatches). Served the Rohilcund campaign in Apr. 1858, and commanded the
2d Brigade at the capture of Bareilly (Medal with two Clasps, and a year's service).
149 Major General Guy commanded the Infantry Brigade of Hope Grant's Column at the
defeat of the Eebels on 4th Nov. 1857 at Marigunge ; commanded at the Alum Bagh from 13th
to 30th Nov. during Sir Colin Cimpbell's advance to the relief of the Lucknow Garrison ; from
1st Dec. 57 to 5th March 1858 commanded the 5th Fusiliers with Outram's Division at Alum
Bagh and engaged in repelling the numerous attacks as also in attacking and routing the
enemy on 22nd Dec. and 25th Feb. capturing guns ; commanded the 3rd Infantry Brigade at
the siege and capture of Lucknow, from 5th to 28th March {CB., Medal and Clasp).
150 Major General F.Seymour served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 with the Scots Fusilier
Guards, including the battles of Alma, Balaklava and Inkerman (wounded), siege and fall of
Sebastopol, and sortie on the 26th October. Was severely wounded in the head while field
officer in command of the right attack in tlic trenches on the 24th August 1855 ; and he
succeeded to the command of 1st Battalion at an early hour at Inkerman (Medal with four
Clasps, CB., Officer of the Legion of Honor, 2nd Class of the INIedjidie, and Turkish Medal).
151 Major General Mitchell served with the R. M. Brigade in the Crimea in 1855; also at
the surrender of Kinbourn (Medal, and Turkish Medal).
152 Major General Steuart served with the 14th Lt. Drs. in the Punjaub campaign of 1848-9,
including the battles of Chillianwallah (sabre wound) and Goojerat, pursuit of the enemy across
the Jhelum, and of the Aftghans over the Indus through the KhyberPass (Medal and Clasps).
Commanded a Cavalry Brigade in the Persian expedition of 1857 (Medal and CB.). Com¬
manded the 2nd Brigade of the Central India Field Force under Sir Hugh Rose in 1858, and
was present at the siege and capture of Rahutghur, relief of Saugor and capture of Gurra-
kota, forcing the Muddenpore Pass, siege and capture of Jhansi, battles of Betwa and Koonch
(Medal and Clasp).
153 Major General North served as FieldEngineer with the Column under Lord Keane in the
Affghan Campaign of 1838-39. Commanded a detachment of Sappers and Miners at Herat in
Central Asia in 1840 and repaired the fortifications of that city. Served as Field Engineer
with the Kandahar Division under Sir Wm. Nott in 1842, taking part in the operations which
led to the reoccupation of Ghuznee and Cabool (slightly v/ouiided, Medal). Served as Field
Engineer with tlie Scinde Field Force in 1843 under Sir Charles Napier (Medal). Served with
the Persian Expedition on special duty under Sir James Outram in 1857 (Medal).
154 Major General Dennis served with the 40th Regt. in China (Medal), and was present at
Chusan (both operations), Canton and Amoy ; after which he was employed as a military
magistrate at Cliusan. lu August 1849, a determined and desperate band of insurgent fanatics
having defeated a native force wliicli had been marclied against them, killing a European officer
and several Sepoys, Major Dennis, with a force consisting of Grenadier Company of the 94th
and 100 Sepoys of the Madras Native Infantry, encountered them at a Pagoda near Teermanam
Coonettos, in Malabar. On the approach of our troops these madmen, armed witli matchlocks,
spears, swords, and war knives, rushed out upon the detachment, and a sanguinary conflict
ensued, terminating in the destruction of the entire Mopla band, 64 in number, three of whom
were killed by Major Dennis, who received a contusion on the chest and a few slight wounds.
Served with the 52d Lt. Inf. in the Indian Campaign of 1857, including the defeat of the Seal-
kote mutineers on the banks of the Ravee on the 12th and ICth July, the siege and capture of
Delhi from 14th August, protected the camp during the assault on the 14th and 15th Sept.,
joined the Regt. in the city on IGtIi September and commanded it until the final capture—men¬
tioned in desjiatches, and thanked by the Governor General (Medal with Clasp).
155 Lord West served on Sir Hugh Gough's Staff throughout the Sutlej campaign of
1845-46, as Aide-de-Camp in the battles of Moodkee and Ferozeshah, and as Officiating Mili¬
tary Secretary during the remainder of the campaign, and in the battle of Sobraon (Medal
and Clasps). Landed with the 21st Fusiliers in the Crimea and was present at ttie battles
fought there: commanded a detached wing in the battle of Inkerman and subsequently the
regiment during the siege from 17th Nov. 1854 to 6 Aug. 1855, including a special command
of two Regiments in support of the storming party of the left column against the Redan on
the 18th June. Had command of the Regiment again on the 8th Sept., and during the assault
was ordered to move to the point of attack in support. In the expedition to Kinbourn he held
command of a Brigade (Medal and Clasps, CB., Officer of the Legion of Honor, Sardinian
and Turkish Medals, and 3rd Class of the Medjidie),
156 Major General Hopkins served with the R. M. Brigade in the Crimea in 1854-55 : in com¬
mand of the 1st Battalion at the battle of Balaklava, and from tlie time of its landing until
detached in command of four companies to join tlie Light Division of tlie Array before
Scbastopol, with which he remained doing duty in camp and in Hie advanced trendies
during the siege from Nov. 1854 to March 1855, and commanded t!ie Royal Marines engaged
at the battle of Inkerman (mentioned in Dispatches, and promoted Brevet Major): after¬
wards commanded the 1st Battalion at Balaklava from March to June 1855 (Medal and three
Clasps, Brevet Lt.Col., CB., Knight of the Legion of Honor, Sardinian Medal, 4th Class of the
Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
