(Medal with two Clasps) ; was awarded the VC " for cool intrepidity and characteristic daring in exiiugui.-hing a
lire in the Delhi M'lgazin'} enclosure, on the i6th September 1S57, under a close and heavy musketry fire from the
enemy, at the imminent risk of his life from the explosion of combustdjle stores in the shed in which the fire
occurred." Served in the Afghan war in 1879-80, and took part in the advance to C'abul wit;h the force under
Brigadier General Charles Gough, including ihe engagement at JugduUuok—severely wounded (mentioned in
desjiatchos, Medal with Clasp).
*" Colonel G. W. Thompson served in the Canton Police Force from 1838 to i860, and was present at the action
of Sheksting with the Kwang Tung rebels on 8th Jan. 18-9. Campaign of i860 in North China, including the
taking of Smho and Tangku, occupation of Tientsin, and surrender of Pekin, the latter part as Orderly Officer to
Brigadier Uruuhart (Medal with two Clasps).

from the gth March 1856 until the withdrawal of the Army. Served as Adjutant of the Bijnour Rajpoot Levy

column of the Looshai Expeditionary Force under Sir G. Bourchier in 1871-72 (mentioned in desi)atches, Medal
with Clasp, and Brevet of Major). Served in the Afghiin war in 1S80 (Medal).
*" Colonel, H. M. Thompson served in the Eastern campaign in 1S55-56, and was present at the siege and fall of
Sebastopol, including the assault on the Quarries on the 8th June, the capture of the Cemetery and RiHe Pits of the
i8th June, and with the Reserve at the attack on the Redan of the 8th September (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish
Medal). Also served in the operations against the Taeping rebels in China in 1863.
■** Colonel G. 0. Thomson served witn the army before Delhi in 1857, from the qist July to the final assault and
capture of the city, and commauded adetacanient of the Kumaoii Battalion in the action of Ludlow Castle under
the walls of the city, when four guns were cajitured (mentioned in despatches). Was afterwards engaged during
the operations leading to the final capture of Lncknow; also throughout the Rohilcund campaign, including the
capture of Bareilly and several other engagements (mentioned in despatches. Medal with Clasp).
