Bombay Staff Corps.—War Services. *53i^
Shapoor on the night of the 15th January 1S45. Commanded Head Quarters 2nd regiment Sind Horse
and a detachment of "ist Sind Horse with the Bombay Column in the Punjaub campaign of 1S43-49, including the
siege and surrender of ilooltan, battle of Goo.jerat, pursuit aud surrender of the Sikh army and occupation of
Peshawur (Medal with two Clasps, and Brevet of Major). Commanded a detachment of Southern Mahratta Horse in
Persia iniSs?; commanded the field detachment of Southern Mahratta Horse and two companies of the 28th Bombay
N.I. which stormed and captured HulguUee on 30th November 1857. Commanded the field force in the operations
against Shorapoor which ended in the occupation of the fortress on the 9th February 1858. Commanded the field
force in the operations against the rebel Chief of Nurgoond which ended in the ca'.)ture of the town and fortress on
the ist June 1858.
' Sir Henry Daly served with the Bombay Column in the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, and was present
at the siege and surrender of Mooltan, battle of Goojerat, pursuit and surrender of the Sikh army (Medal with two
Clasps). Commanded the ist Punjaub Cavalry at the passa.ge of the Kotah Pass, and against the Hill Tribes in
1850-51-52 (Medal with Clasp). Commanded the Corps of Guides at the siege of Delhi in 1857 (twice wounded and
horse killed, Brevet of Major, and CB.). Commanded Hodson's Horse at the siege of Lucknow in 1858 (Brevet of
lit.Golonel), and the Brigade of Hodson'sHorse throughout Sir Hope Grant's campaign inOudo in.1858-59, includinf?
the action at Nawabgunge and passages of the Goomtee and Gogra.
" Lieut.General T. Stock served against the Koolees in the Mahee Kanta, and the Bhoels in the vicinity of
Doongurpoor in 1830; commanded detachment of the 23rd Regiment which took part in the attack and capture of
the village of Kurraul and the release of the Thakoor. Served with the expedition to Mangalore aud Canara
in 1837, and in Upper and Lower Sind from 1839 to 1841.
^2 Lieut.General W.B. Salmon served with the Bombay Columnof the Army of the Indus in Sind and Affghanistaa
in 1838-39, and was present at the storm and capture of Ghuznee (Medal).
'* Lieut.General S.J.K.Whitehill served with the 23rd Bombay N.I. with the force in Sind under Lord Keane from
1838 to 1842, and with a field force in the Northern Conoan in pursuit of Ragoojee Bangria from 1844 to 1846. Served
with the Persian Expeditionary Force in 1857, and present at the bombardment and capture of Mohumra (Medal with
Clasp). Served in command of the Guzcrat Horse with Brigadier Parkc's Brigade in pursuit of Tantia Topee in
1S58-59; also in command of the Guzerat Horse with the field forces under Major A. Honner and Colonel Stiles
against the Wagheers in Kattywar in 1859-60; and in command of a field force in the Rewa Kanta in i860.
^^ Lieut. General G. R. W. Hervey served with the 23rd Bombay N.I. in the expedition to Mangalore andCanarain
1837, ^ud with the Sind Irregular Horse as 2nd in Command, and for some time in command of that corps and
of a Belooch Lev.y in Upper Sind in 1840-42; with a wing of his regiment in Cutch and in command of H. H. the
Rao's Horse intheRunnin 1843-44. Served as Aide de Camp and Secretary to Sir James Outram in the Bxpeditionto
Persia, including the march to Borazjoon, action at Khooshab, and the operations at Mohumra in 1857 (Brevet of
Major, Medal with Clasp, and CB.).
'° Major General C. M. Barrow served the campaign of 1838-39 in Scind and Affghanistan, and was present at the
storm and capture of Ghuznee (Medal), and in the attack on the stronghold of the Affghan chief Ruheem Khan. Also
the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, including the siege and surrender of Mooltan, battle of Goojerat, pursuit and
surrender of the Sikh Army (Medal with two Clasps). Commanded the 19th Regiment Native Infantry whilst em¬
ployed against the Gwalior mutineers under Tantia Topee, the Rao Sahib, and the Nawab of Banda in the Rajpoona
Btates in 1858, in the pursuit throuj^h Malwa, Bundlekund, and Central India, and present at the actions of Bajghur,
Mungrowlee, Sindwaho, and Kurai (Medal with Clasp).
'" Lieut. General G. A. Leckie served in Sind in 1842-43, and was present at the battle of Hyderabad (Medal).
•^ Lieut. General R. Richards served as Staff Officer to fljie Field Force at Wanga Bazaar and other places in the
Thurr or Great Desert of Sind from March 1843 to March 1844. This force opened the postal communication with
the army under Sir Charles Napier, and suppressed the Robber Tribes in the Great Desert. Was at the destruction
of the Forts of Deepla and Nowakote, belonging to the insurgent Amir Shore Shah Mahommed. Served in the
Punjaub campaign of 1848-49 with the 3rd Bombay Native Infantry, including the siege and surrender of Mooltan,
battle of Goojerat, and pursuit and surrender of the Sikh army (Medal with two Clasps). Served with the Field Force
under Colonel Bradsh aw which penetrated the Eusofzie country north of Peshawur in December 1849, for the purpose
of chastising the Hill Tribes on the Swat border, and was present at the capture and destruction of Sugao, Palai,
Shurkhance, and Zoormunda in the Bazdurra Valley on the nth and 14th of that month (mentioned in despatches.
Medal with Clasp).
2^ Major General Lucas served in the campaign in the Southern MahrattaCountry in 1844-45, and was present at the
taking of the Ports of Monohur and Munsuntosh. Served on the Divisional Staff 2nd Division Persian Expeditionary
Force in 1857, including the bombardment and capture of the Forts of Mohumra, aud pursuit of the Persian Army
(Medal with Gliisp). Also served on the Divisional Staff with the Rnjpootana Field Division throughout the Indian
mutiny campaign, includingthe siege and capture by assault of Kotah, pursuit of the rebel Army from April 1858 to
January 1S59, action of Sanganeer, battle of Bunass, pursuit of Tantia Topee and Ferozeshah (several times men¬
tioned in despatches. Brevet of Major, Medal with Clasp). Served as head of the Commissariat throughout the
Abyssinian campaign in 1867-68 (mentioned in despatclies. Brevet of Colonel, CB., and Medal).
2^ Sir Robert Phayre served with the field force in Sind and Affghanista.n from 1840 to 1845, commanded a
party of the Pooua Irregular Horse at the action at Kotra, present at the battle of Meeanee—severely wounded
(Medal).
''' Major General W. C. Anderson served throughout the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, including the siege and
surrender of Mooltan, battle of Goojerat, pursuit and surrender of the Sikh army (Medal with two Clasps).
^* Major General G. U. Price served with the ist Grenadier Regiment in Sind in 1843, and was present at the
Spattles of Meeanee and Hyderabad (Medal).
^' Major General W. L. Cahusac served with the Expeditionary Force in Persia in 1857, including the bombard¬
ment .and capture of Mohumra (Medal).
^' Sir Lewis Pelly served as Aide de Camp and as Political Secretary and Persian Interpreter to General John
Jacob commanding Cavalry during the Persian Expedition of 1857, including the occupation of Bushire.
=■" Colonel F. Schneider served with the loth Bombay N.I. in tlie campaign in the Southern Mahratta Country in
1844-45, and was present at the taking of the forts of Munohur and Munsuntosh.
-^5 Major General C. T. Aitchison served in the campaign in the Southern Mahratta Country in 1844-45 as Field
Engineer, and was present at the storm and capture of Samunghur, Boodurghur, Punulla (wounded), Powunghur,
Munohur, and M\'.nsuntosli (mentioned in despatches). Served as Major of Brigade in Persian Expeditionary Force
in 1856-57, aiidwas present at the assault and capture of Reshire, surrender of Bushire, expedition to Borazjoon,
and action at Khooshab (mentioned in despatches and received the thanks of the Governor General in Council,
Medal with Clasp, aud Brevet of Major). Served with Colonel Malcolm's Field Force in Southern Mahratta Countrj'
during the mutiny in 1857-58, in command of 200 Europeans during forced march on Shorapore,andatthe surrender
and occupation of that fortress (Medal).
" Cotonel R. H. Keatinge served as Political Officer with the Mhow Field Force and ist Brigade Central
India Field Force in 1857-53 ;it the siege of Dhar, three days' fighting near Mundesora, and at the siege of
Chandaree—dangerously wounded in three places (Brevet of Major, Medal with Clasp, and Victoria Cross). Com¬
manded a force of irregular troops against Seeta Ram Holkar in Sathpoora Hills in October 1858; served with
Brigadier Parke's Brigade in pursuit of Tantia Toijee in November 185S; commanded irregular troops against
insurgents in Sathpoora Hills in 1859 ; commanded field detachments in ICattywar against rebel Wagheers in 1865.
58 Colonel C. T. Palin served with the Bombay Column in the Puujaub campaign of 184S- 49, aud was present
at the siege and surrender of Mooltan, battle of Goojerat, pursuit and surrender of the Sikh army (Medal with
two Clasps).
=5 Colonel C. Thompson served in the campaign in the Southern Mahratta Country in i8?(4-45, and was present
at the storm and capture of Samnughur and Po\vunghur; dangerously wounded at the taking of the village
of Seevapore. Served with the Persian Expeditionary Force in 1856-57, and was present at the assault aud
capture of Reslure aud surrender of Bushire (Medal with Clasp). Served with the field force in the latter part of
1857 as Staff Officer to Brigadier General LeG. Jacob, at the assault and capture of Kolapoor from the rebels on
6th December 1857.
