'' Colonel W. M. Cafe was present at the battle of Maharajpore 29th December T843 (Bronze Star). Also
throughout the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, including tne actions of Sadoolapore, Chillianwallah, and Goojerat,
and pursuit of the feikhs and Affghans (Medal with two ClaSj-s). Served during the Indian mutiny (Medal, and
Victoria Giosd).
'' Colonel S. Chalmers served in the Sonthal campaign in 1S55. Also in the Indian mutiny campaign, including
the siege and capture of Lucknow—severely wounded (Medal with Clasp).
" Colonel C. P. Hildebrand served in the Burmese war of 1852-53 (Medal with Clasp for Pegn).
5' Colonel J. M. Earle served throughout the Sutlej campaign of 1845-46, and was present at the actions of
Moodkee, Ferozeshah, Buddiwal, and Aliwal (Medal and two Clasps).
^ Colonel E. S. Jackson was Adjutant of the 12th Bengal Native Infantry when the Wing at Nowgong
mutinied in June 1857, and was instrumental in saving the life of Mrs. Kerchoff, the wife of the Sergeant Major, whom
he rescued from danger) y carrying her behind him on horseback. Was engaged in an affair with a party of
Bundeelas.
'™ Colonel G. Smart served with the expedition to China n 1S60 and was present at the capture of the Taku
Forts (Medal with Clasp).
'™ Colonel J. C. P. Baillio served throughout the Indian mutiny campaigns of 1857-59; ^"s Oi-derly Officer to
General Nicholson in the engagement with the Sealkote mutineers near Goordaspore on the 12th July
1857 (severely wounded) ; served with Brigadier Seaton's Column at the actions of Gungeree and Puttiallee, and
re-occupation of Mynporie. AtKankur, Rohilcund border, in April 183S ; served with the Soraon Field Force at the
taking of Forts Dehain and Tiroul. Served with Brigadier Kelly's Force during the operations iu the Terai, and
present at the actions of Ruttonpore, and attack made on the rebels' position in lower Nepaul range — wounded
(mentioned in despatches, Medal).
'"^ Colonel R. Blair served in the Sonthal campaign in 1856. Also during the Indian mutiny of i857-£,8,
including the Bundlecund campaign in 1859 under Brigadier Wheeler (Medal).
1°* Colonel H. A. Browne served throughout the Burmese war of 1952-53, and was present at various
skirmishes (Medal with Clasp for Pegu).
'OS Colonel W. F. Stephens served in the Sutlej campaign of 1845-46 and A-as present at the battle of Moodkee
(charger shot" on Escort duty with the Commander in Chief (Medal).
'°* Colonel j. Blair served throughout the Indian mutiny campaign of 1857-59, and was present at the siege
of Neemuch, siege and assaultat Kotah and pursuit of Tantia Topee (Medal with Clasp, and awarded the Victoria
Cross for " gallant and daring conduct" at Neemuch, and "in fighting his way most gallantly through a body of
rebels at Jeerum who add literally surroun led him. . . . received a severe sword-cut on his right arm").
"" Colonel M. Thomson served througho.<t the mutiny of 1857-58, was engaged in the trenches at Cawnpore
during the massacre, was one of the only four survivors, and was five times wounded and had a horse shot under
him (Medal, Brevet of Major, and a year's service).
"' Sir Charles Gough served throughout the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, including the action of Ram-
nuggur, passage of the Chenab, and battles of Sadoolapore, Chillianwalla, and Goojerat (Medal with two Clasps).
Served iu the Indian mutiny campaign of 1857-58 ; with the Guide Corps at siege and capture of Delhi; commanded
Guide Cavalry in affairs at Khurkonda on 15th, and Rhotuck on 17th and i3th August; engaged in the cavalry affair
in rear of the Camp on nth September. Served with Brigadier Showers' Column in the Delhi and Jhujjur districts.
Was engaged in the action of Narnoleon the 16th November. Served with Hodson's Horse at the actions of Gun-
geeree, Putteallee, Mynpoorie, and Shumshabad (wounded). Commanded a Squadron of Hodson's Horse at action
ofMeangunge; presenlt hroughoul; siege and capture of Lucknow (Medal with two Clasps, Victoria Cross, and
Brevet of Major).
i'2 Colonel S. De B. Edwardes served in the Mahee Kanta Field Force in 1858, in pursuit of Tantia Topee, present
at the action of Auoria ; served as Deputy Assistant Quarter Master General in the Abyssinian Expedition in 1868,
present at the action of Arogee and at the assault and capture of Magdala (Medal).
"* Colonel R. S. Hill served in defence of Kumaon Hills and Rohilcund against the rebels in 1857-58; present
at Chapoorah; with Brigadier Troup's Column during the campaign in Oude and present at the actions of Pusgaon
and Russoolpore, attack and capture of Fort Mittowlee, and action of Biswah (Metlal). Sei'ved in the Bhootan
campaign of 1865-66 (Medal with Clasp); and in the Huzara campaign of 1868 including the operations on the "Black
Mountain" (Clasp).
11* Colonel H. Melvill served in the Kumaon Militiat during 1857 and commanded Cavalry in an attack made
from Nynoe Tal upon a portion of the Rohilcund rebels. Served with the Oude Police Cavalry from May till
September 1858 ; was in command of a Police Force (Cavalry and Infantry) at Mahou near Lncknow when an
attack was made cr.t bat post by the enemy on the evening of the 7tl' 4ugust 1858. Commanded the Cavalry in
an attack made by a I'olice Force upon the fort and position of Birwa 0^ J6th August 1858 (Medal).
"' Colonel E. M. Lawford was employed in Beagal and Bundlecund from February to December 1859.
'" Lt.Colonel G. B. Fisher was present with the 32nd Bengal Native Infantry in the Sonthal district during
the mutinies of 1837, and marched with the Head Quarters from Bowsee to Raueegunge when the four companies
on command mutinied. Took a detachment of volunteers from his regiment to China, and served with the 65th
N. I. during the occupation of Canton in 18=8-59 (Medal).
'" Lt.Colonel W. A. Franks was present with the Head Quarters of the i^th Bengal Native Infantry when
it mutinied at Nowgong on the loth June 1857. He served subsequently throughout the mutiny campaign
(Medal).
1'" Lt.Colonel H. K. Bushe served with the Belgaum Field J'orce in 1857-58, and was present at the surrender
and occupation of thef ortress of Shorapore.
1^0 Lt.Colonel R. W. Elton was present with his regiment at the outbreak of the mutiny at Delhi on the nth
May 1857. Served in the Meerut Volunteer Horse, and was preroent with it at the defeat of Wulledad Khan at
Galowtee, and on several other occasions when attached to the lefi wing ist Belooch Battalion. Was present with
General Penny's Force at the action of Kurkralee ; was with the Commander in Chief's Force at the action before
Bareilly on 5th May 1858, and at repulse of rebels by the Commander in Chief on the occasion of their attacking
our outposts at Shahjehanpore ; present in the operations near Mahomdy and relief of Fort Jellalabad ; present
with the Battalion at the taking of Port Ramporo Kussia by Brigadier Wetherell's Force; with Commander in
Chief's Force at occupation of forts of Ameytce and Sunkerpore, and at the defeat of Beni Madho at Dundea
Keeree ; also at the action at Churda and taking cl Fort Mayeedia; present at the capture of 14 guns by Brigadier
Horsford's Force at Sikha Ghat in Nepaul (Medal).
'^' Lt.Colonel W. E. D. Broughton served durng the Indian mutiny (Medal).
'22 Lt.Colonel W. Howey served with the 32nd Light Infantry during the Indian mutiny in 1858-59, and was
present at the capture of the fort of Tyroul, action of Jugdespore, surrender of the forts of Ahmetie and Shunker-
pore, and pursuit of Beni Madho (M^dal).
123 Lt,Colonel II. H. Stansfeld served with the loth Foot throughout the Indian mutiny, and was present at the
siege of Lucknow and several skirmishes in Oude, Azimghur, and the Jugdespore Jungles iMcdal with Clasp).
'^i Lt.Colonel T. M. Shelley was present at the outbreak of the mutiny at Meerut on the loth Maj- 1S57. He
served afterwards iu several actioi-s from the nth August to the 29th September before Delhi, and at the assault
and capture of the:city—wounded (Medal with Clasp).
'25 Lt.Colonel J. G. Campbell served with 3rd Bengal Europeans during the Indian mutinies of 1857-58, in-
clndinc the operations at Shereghur Ghat in Mav :858, and with the column from Agra towards Gwalior in June
1858 (Modal). Served with the 30th Punjaub Infantry in the Bhootan carapaign of 1864-65, an was present at
the captures of Chamoorchi, Bala, and Nagoh (Medal with Clasp).
126 Lt.Colonel H. St. G. Tucker served with the 19th Punjaub Infantry in the campaign of i860 in China (Medal).
127 Lt.Colonel M. G. Clerk served in the Indian mutiny campaigns in 1857-59, and was present with Havelock'a
Force at the actions of Mungarwar and Alumbagh, remaining intheAlumbagh with the force under Lt.Colonel
M'Intyre, and acted as Assistant Field Engineer; afterwards present at the capture of Luoknow (Medal with
Clasp, and a year's service).
