*2 Colonel Thomason served in the Indian mutiny campaign, including the battle of Budleekeserai, and through¬
out the siege and capture of Delhi (Medal with Clasp).
*■• Lt. Colonel George Newmarch served as Assistant Field Engineer in constructing the defences of Meerut from
May to Sept. 1857 ; afterwards in command of a Detachment of Sappers and four field guns in the Seharunpore
and Mozuifernuggur districts under Colonel J. Brind, assisted in the operations against the Rohilcund rebels, and ia
the disarming of the town of Meeranpore (Medal).
** Lt. Colonel Champain served in the Indian mutiny campaign as Adjutant of the Bengal Sappers at the actions on
the Hind m, battle of Budleekeserai, and throughout the siege and capture of Delhi (wounded); commanded Head
Quarters' Detachment of Sappers at the taking of Futtehpore Sikree, and in the Agra district under Colonel Cotton ;
served as Adjutant at the siege and capture of Lucknow; was specially employed under Brigadier Douglas in the
Gazeepore and Shalia'jad districts, present at the final capture of Jugdespore, and at the pursuit of the rebels to the
Kymore Hills (Medal with two Clasps).

the siege of Delhi, and accompanied the storming party at the assault of the Water Bastion—slightly wounded; had
charge of the Engineer Park at the siege and capture of Lucknow (Medal with two Clasps).

5* Major R. G. Smyth served in "the Indian mutiny campaign, and was present at the final siege and capture of
Lucknow in 1858 (Medal with Clasp).

53 Major Carter served in the Sikkim expedition, India, under ColonelGawlor in 1861 (mentioned m despatches,.
and thanked by the Government of India). Served throughout the campaign of 1863 against the Boneyrs and other
Affghan tribes, including the storm and recapture of the "Craig Piquet and Umbeyla, and destruction of Mulkah
(mentioned in despatches. Medal with Clasp). Served in the Abyssinian campaign as Director of the Trigono¬
metrical Survey, and was mentioned in despatches as having " by the most strenuous exertions (together with his
Assistants Liouts. Diimmuler and Holdich), and at a cost of great fatigue and privations, succeeded in surveying
nearly 6,000 square miles, and carried their work from the coast to Magdala " (Medal).

War Services of Boyal Engineers (late Madras Engineers).
I Sir Arthur Thomas Cotton sen-ed throughout the Burmese war of 1S24-26 under Sir Archibald Campbell, aiul
was present at the capture of Rangoon, reccmnoitring in gunboats and jungle fighting near Kemundine, attack of
stockades and Pagoda of Syriam, capture of Mergui and Tavoy, defence of the Lines at Rangoon and attack of the
left Hank of the Burmese Entrenchments, attack of the Stockade of Kokein, siege and capture of Donabew, attack of
Shan Stockades and of stockades on the left bank of the Irrawaddy near Prome, capture of Melloon and jungle
fight at Paghanimew which terminated the war (Medal with Clasp).
8 Colonel Sankey served in the Indian mutiny campaigns of 1857-58, and was present at the operations at
Cawnpore under General Windham, siege and capture of Lucknow (Brevet of Major, Medal with Clasp). Served
in the Afghan war of 1878-79 as Commanding Royal Engineer in the Southern Afghanistan FieldForce {CB. Medal).
9 Colonel MulUns in the second Burmese w.-ir as Senior Engineer Officer, and commanding the Detachment of
Sappers arid.Mincrs with the force under Brigadier General Cheape, employed agaiiist the Chief Myah Toon in the
vicinity of Donabew, in February and March 1853.

13 Colonel H. N. D. Prcndergast served with the Madras Sappers and Miners in Persia in 1857, and was present
at the bcnubardment of Mohumrah (Medal with Clasp). Served as Assistant Field Engineer with the Malwa Field
Force in 1857, and with the Central India Field Force under Sir Hugh Rose in 1858. took part in the sieges of Dhar,
Ratghur, Goratote, and Jhansi. was present at nearly all the battles and minor affairs of the above forces till the
capture of Calpeo (Medal with Clasp, and Brevet of Major). Received the Victoria (.'ross for distinguished bravery,
first at the battle of Mundesore (severely wounded), second at the battle of the Becna near Ratghur (horse shot),
third at the battle ofBetwa (severely woiiudod). Commanded the Detachment of throe Companies of Madras Sappers
and Miners in Abyssinia, was Field Engineer during the advance, and was present at the action before Magdala
(mentioned in despatches as having "rendered singularly valuable and important services," Brevet of Lt.Colonel,
„nd Medal).
