«3 Colonel .1. P. Maquay served as Captain with the Engineers' Force of the Turkish Contingent in the Crimea
in 1855-56 (Turkish Medal). Served in the Indian campaigia of 1357-59, was severely wounded at JElowa, and present
at three other engagements (mentioned in several despatches, Medal with Clasp).
^= Colonel AT. B. trosset served as Assistant Field Engineer with the Central India Field Force under Sir Hugh
Rose 1111858; was Directing Engineer with the storming party at the assault'of the hill Fort of Chandairee, present at
the siege and storming of Jhansi, commanded the 21st Companj- Royal Engineers during the action of Koonch,
present at the actions of Goolowlee, Calpee, and Gwalior, and the capture of the two latter places (several times
mentioned in despatches, Medal with Clasp).
«^ Lt.Colonel Malcolm served with the 23rd Company throughout the Indian mutiny, inclnding the action of Futteh-
pore, relief of Lucknow, battle of Cawnpore, affair of Seraighat, capture of Lucknow (mentioned in despatches),
capture of Roo3'a, AUygunge, and Bareill.y (Medal with two Clasps).
^' Colonel MacDonnell served throughout the Abyssinian campaign with Head Quarters in command of Bombay
Sappers and Miners, and was present at the action of Arogee and capture of Magdala (mentioned in despatches as
having "rendered valuable and important services," Brevet of Major, and Medal).
'■'' Li. Colonel C. E. Webber served with the 21st Company Royal Engineers throughout the campaign of 1858 in
Central India under Sir Hugh Rose, was present at the siege and storming of Chandairie, and was in charge of
the only successful ladder party at the escalade of Jhansie, where he was one of the ollicers who led the assault;
also served in the campaign of 1859, and was present at the actions of the Betwa, Koonch, Goolowlee, and before
Calpee, including the capture of that place, and in the pursuit of Tantia Topee and Feroze Shah (three times
mentioned in despatches. Medal with Clasp, and received the thanks of the Governor of Bombay). Accompanied
Sir Garnet Wolseley to South Africa on special service in May 1879, and served to the end of the war as Assistant
Adjutant and Quarter Master General of the western lines of communication. Served in a similar capacity in the
Transvaal during the operations against Sekuknni in 1879 (Medal with Clasp).
*'i" Lt.Colonel J. M. H. Maitland served in China in 1857-59, and was present during the occupationof Canton and
at the storming of Chek-Hung under Sir Charles Straubenzee. Served at the attack on the Peiho Forts on the
25th June 1859 under Rear Admiral Hope, when he was in command of the Marksmen on board a division of Gun
Boats during the naval action, and in charge of the ladder party when the assault was made over the mud.
Specially mentioned in despatches " for gallantry, &c." (Medal).
'" Lt.Colonel Festing served in the first Brigade of Sir Hugh Rose's Central India Field Force throughout the
campaign, and afterwards in the Gwalior Division under Sir Robert Napier; present at the captures of Chan-
deyree, Jhansi, Calpee, Gwalior, and Poorie; actions of Koonch and Goolowlee (Medal with Clasp).
"1 Lt.Colonel Papillon served in China dui'ing 1858-60, accompanied the expeditions to the North in 1858 and i860 ;
during the campaign of the latter j-ear commanded as a Lieutenant the 8th Company Ro.yal Engineers, present at
the siege and capture of the Taku Forts (Aug. 21st and 22nd) and engaged at the affairs of Sinho, Changkyawang,
and Pahlichaou (Medal -with two Clasps).
''' Colonel G. D. Pritchaj-d served during the Indian mutiny of 1857-59 with the 23rd Company Royal Engineers,
and was jiresont at the action of Khujwa, throughout the relief of Lucknow by Lord Clydri, battle of Cawnpore on
6th Dec. 1857, action of Khodagunge, siege and capture of Lucknow, throughout the Rohilcund campaign, in¬
cluding the attack on Fort Rooya, action of Allygunge, and capture of Bareilly; throughout the Oude and Trans-
Gogra campaign, including the action of Dounderakera, attack on Port Oomreah, action of Burjeedia, capture of
Fort Musjeedia, and affiiir on the Raptee near Bankee (Medal with two Clasps). Served dui'ing the China war of
i860, and was present at the actions of Sinho and Tangku, led the assaulting party (after Major Graham, Royal
Engineers, was woimdod) at the storming of the North Taku Fort, being one of the first to enter; present at the
affairs of the i8th and 23rd Sept., and the surrender of Pekin (twice mentioned in despatches. Medal with two
Clasps, and Brevet of Major). Commanded the loth Comjiany Royal Engineers throughout the Abyssinian cam¬
paign and was present at the action of Arogee, and storming of the Fortress of Magdaia—wounded in the right
arm and shoulder (mentioned in despatches. Brevet of Lt.Colonel, and Medal).
'3 Lt.Colonel Brooke served in the New Zealand war of 1863-64, and was wounded in the action at Rangariri,
also present at the action of Kakaramea, and capture of Wereroa Pah (mentioned in despatch. Brevet of Major,
and Medal).
'* Colonel Harrison served during the Indian mutiny of 1857-59, and was present at attacks on the Alumbagh
under Outram ; at the siege and capture of Lucknow; throughout the Rohilcund campaign, including affairs at Fort
Roolah, Alleegunge, and Bareilly; through the Oude campaign of 1858-59, including the affair at Baxarghat; and
as Acting Adjutant to the Commanding Royal Engineer in India during the Trans-Gogra campaign, including
affairs at Burgudiah, Fort Mudjidea, and Bankee (Medal with Clasj)). Served during the China war of i860, and
was present at the affairs of Sinho and Tangku, and siege and capture of the Taku Forts. Was attached tot'ne Quarter
Master General's Staff during the advance on and surrender of Pekin, and present at the affairs of Senho and
TJleangho on the iSth and 23rd Sept. (meniicnedin despatches. Medal with two Clasps, and Brevet of Major). Served
in the Zulu war of 1879, first as Engineer at Head Quarters, afterwards as Assistant Quarter Master General, and
was in charge of the Quarter Master General's Department during the second ailvance into Zululand, and present
in the engagement at Ulundi (mentioned in despatches, and CB.). Was subsequently appointed to the commantl
of the Flying Column. On the dissolution of that column was placed in coinmand of the Transvaal District,
conducteil the reconnaissances that preceded the operations against Sekukuni, and, afterwards, maintained the
supplies of the forces engaged, and made the military dispositions necessitated by the hostile attitude of the
Boers (mentioned in despatches. Medal with Clasp).
"5 Lt.Oolonel Courtney served with the e.xjieditionary force in China in 1858-62, and was present at the action of
Sheksing with the Kwantnng rebels on the 8th Jan. 1859. Accompanied the Naval foi-ccs under Sir Michael Sey¬
mour to the Peiho river in May 1858, and was engaged in the demolition of the forts at its mouth. Served firouo-h-
out the campaign of i860 in North China as Acting Adjutant to the combined force of Roj'al Engineers and Madras
Sappers, and was present at the actir,i:.s of Sinho and Tanku, siege and capture of the Taku Forts (mentioned in
despatches), and surrender of Pekin (Medal with two Clasps, CB.).
"> Lt.Colonel Sanford served in China in 1858, during the occupation of Canton, the expedition to Peiho.

^ Major D. C. Walker served with the Rajpootana Field Force in 1855-58, and was present at the capture of Fort
Awah and the siege of Kotah (Medal with Clasp).
'8 Major Hime served throughout the campaign of i860 in North China, and was present at the actions of Sinho
and Tangku, storm and capture of the Taku Forts, and surrender of Pekin (Medal with two Clasps).
"' Major Keith sei-ved in the Indian campaign of 1857-58, and was present at the capture of Lucknow (Medal
with Clasp).
"^t Major R. O. Jones landed on the Gold Coast on the 23rd December 1873 in command of the 28th Company
Royal Engineers, and served until the close of the Ashanti war (Medal).
•*" Major Clements served throughout the campaign of i860 in North China, and. was present at the actions of
Sinho and Tangku, storm and capture of the Taku Forts, action near Tungchow, and sui-render of Pekin (Medal
with two Clasps).
*^ Major Sturt served in the Abyssinian campaign and commanded No. 2 Company Bombay Sappers which did
excellent service on the Scuafe Pass and the Sooro Defile, and was present at the action of Arogeo and capture of
Magdala (Medal).
