226 War Services of the Officers of the Boijal Engineers.
^* Colonel Crease served in the Crimea during the winter of 1855-56 under Sir R. H. Vivian; was second in
command of the Engineer Force with the Turkish Contingent with the local rank of Major, and commanded the
ijngmeers during the latter four months of the occupation of Kertch by the Allies (Turkish Medal). Served with
the Central India Field Force under Sir Hugh Rose ; was Field Engineer and commanded the 21st CompanyRoyal
Jtogmeers during the summer of 1858, and was present at the battles of Autsee and Gwalior and capture of Gwalior
(Medal with Clasp).
^« Colonel Ravenhill served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the battles of Alma and Inkerman, and
siege of Sebastopol (Brevet of Major, Medal with three Clasps, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
" Colonel Sibome served in the Kaffir war of 1851-53 (Medal). Also in the expedition against the Basutas in
Dec. 1852, having charge of the Pontoons by which the Troops crossed the Orange and Caledon rivers. Present at
the action of the Berea, and mentioned in general orders.
^ Lieut. General Nicholson served at the siege and fall of Sebastopol from August 1855,commanded 4th Company
R-E. at Kiubourn, and was in immediate direction of the works for the destruction of Sebastopol Dockj'ard (Medal
with Clasp, Brevet of Major, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Served in the Indian campaign from
i2th Dec. 1857 to 23rd Dec. 1858, and was present at the capture of Lucknow (Brevet of Lt.Colonel, CB., Medal
with Clasp), has been frequently mentioned in despatches.
^' Colonel Cox served in the Indian mutiny campaign, including the siege and capture of Lucknow, campaign
in Ro hi icuTid and battle of Bareilly as Adjutant of Royal Engineers (Medal with Clasp, and Brevet of Major).
■"> Colonel Fowler sei-ved throughout the Kaffir war of 1B51-53 (Medal).
*'Colonel Brine served as a volunteer in the Crimean campaign from the 5th July 1855, including the siege ana
fad of Sebastopol, and battle of the Tchernaya; did duty in the Trenches of the Right Attack (Medal with Clasp,
and Turkish Medal). Was present with Colonel Neale, H.M. Minister, in the flag ship Euryalus at the naval
engagement under Vice Admiral Kuper with the Forts at Kagosima in Japan including the attacks on the shore
batteries on the 15th and 16th Aug. 1863 (thanked in despatches, and Brevet of Major; also created a Knight of the
Tower and Sword of Portugal).
*■• Sir Howard Elphinstone served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the siege and fall of Sebastopol, and
was wounded during the assault of the 8th Sept. 1855 (Medal with Clasp, Victoria Cross, Brevet of Major, Knight of
the Legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
" Colonel Cumberland served in the Crimea from 13th Sept. 1855, and was employed in the demolition of the
Docks of Sebastopol (Crimean and Turkish Medals). Served in the Indian campaign of 1857-59 ; '^^^ Commanding
Engineer a,t the siege and fall of Fort Ahwah, and present at the siege and capture of Kotah, conducting the First
Column at the assault (Brevet of Major, Medal with Clasp).
*5 Major General liCnnox landed in the Crimea on 30th Sept. 1854 and served uninterruptedly with the Army there
until it re-embarked in June 1^56; was present at the battleof Inkerman, attack and capture of the Rifle Pits on 20th
Nov. 1854 (Victoria Cross), siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with two Clasps, Sardinian and Turkish Medals, and
5th Class of the Medjidie). Served in the Indian campaign of 1857-58 ; was present at the action of Khujwa ; com¬
manded the Engineer Brigade at the relief of Lucknow by Lord Clyde (mentioned in Lord Clyde's despatch, and
thanked by the Governor General in Council), and against the Gwalior Contingent ending in its defeat at the battle
of Cawnpore on 6th Dec.; present at the action of Khodagunj; served at the siege of Lucknow in March 1858 (men¬
tioned in Chief Engineer's report, and received Brevet of Major) ; commanded the Engineers at the attack on Fort
Booya, and at the action of Alleegunj; present at the capture of Bareilly, and at the action of Doundeakera ; com¬
manded the Engineers at the attack of Fort Oomreeah ; present at the affair of Burgeedia, the capture of Fort Mus-
jeedia, and the allnir on the River Raptee near Bankee 31st Dec. 1858 (four times mentioned in despatches. Medal
with two Clasps, and Brevet of Lt.Colonel). Wna sent to the German armies during the Franco-German war, and
was with them from the 14th November 1870 till the loth March 1S71. Present at the siege of Paris from nth to
15th December 1870; at the siege of Mezieres from the 24th December till its surrender on the 2nd January 1871;
at the siege of Paris from the loth January till the 4th Febi uary; and at the siege of Belfort from 7th February
till the entry of the German troops on the iSth February 1871.
*' Colonel Stuart served during the operations of 1856-58 at Canton; was present at the capture and demolition
of French Folly Fort and at the formation of defensive position at the Factories; led the French Storming Party
at the assault of Canton, and was thanked by the French Naval Commander in Chief (Medal, and Brevet of
Major).
■"^ Major General Graham served throughout the Eastern campaign of 1854-55, including the battles of Alma and
Inkerraan, and served in the Trenches throughout the siege of Sebastopol—twice wounded. Led a ladder party to the
assault of the Redan on the i8th June 1855 (Victoria Cross), and was on duty in the Trenches at the final assault of
the 8th Sept. Employed in the destruction of the Docks of Sebastopol (Medal with three Clasps, Knight of the
Legion of Honor, sth'Class of the Medjidie, Turkish Medal, and Brevet of Major). Served throughout the cam¬
paign cf i860 in North China, including the assault of Tangku and the Taku Forts, and surrender of Pekin—
wounded with jingall-ball (Medal with two Clasps, and Brevet of Lt.Colonel).
'"Colonel I'hilips served in theCrimeafromSeptember 1854 to February 1855, including the siege of Sebastopol
attack and capture of the Russian Rifle-pits on the 20th November 1854, and battle of Inkerman. Was mentioned
in despatches with other Lieutenants of Engineers as having " particularly distinguished himself" during the
siege (Medal with two Clasps, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
'^ Colonel Drake served in the Crimea from Nov. 1854 to May 1855, including the siege of Sebastopol (Medal with
Clasp, Knight of the Legion of Honor, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
=* Colonel James served at the siege of Sebastopol from Feb. 1855 until taken prisoner of war on 2nd July
(Medal with Clasp, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal). Was attached to the Turco-Russian Boundary
Coniiaissions in Bessarabia and Asia in 1856-57.
5" Colonel C. G. Gordon served in the Trenches before Sebastopol from Dec. 1854 to the close of the siege
(wouinl£d on 6th June 1855). Accompanied the Column under Sir John Campbell at the attack of the Redan on the
i3th June; accompanied the Company of Sappers attached to the expedition to Kinbourn, and present at the sur¬
render of that fort. Was employed in the demolition of the Docks of Sebastopol; and sulDsequently employed ou
the Turco-Russian Boundary Commissions in Bessarabia and Asia in 1856-57 (Medal with Clasp, Knight of the
Legion of Honor, and Tm-kish Medal). Served in the Chinese war of i860 (Medal with Clasp for Pekin); and in the
operations against the rebels undertaken by the British Forces in 1862, including the captures of the cities of
Kahding, Singpo, Cholin, and Najow (Brevet of Major). Commanded in 1863 and 64 a native Imperialist Force in
thirty-threeengagements with the rebels (Brevet of Lt.Colonel, and CB., and the highest Chinese rank and honors).
i" Colonel Edwards served in the Crimea from 14th Sept. 1855, and was employed in the demolition of the Docks
of Sebastopol (Medal, and Turkish Medal). Served in India in 1857-59, and commanded a Company of the Royal
Engineers throughout the caniimign in Central India under Sir Hugh Rose ; present at the siege and storming of
Uhandairee (commanded the ladder party at the assault, mentioned in despatches), siege and storming of Jhansi
(directed the only two successful columns of assault), actions of theBetwah and Koonch (mentioned in despatches),
actions before Calpee from the 15th to the 21st May, action of Goolowlee on 22nd May, in which he supported
with his Companj' a portion of the 2stli Bombay Native Infantry which had been driven back by overpowering
numbers (specially mentioned in Sir Hugli Rose's despatch for "prompt resolution in charging most successfully
the very superior force of the rebels, routing them with loss, and pursuing them till out of reach"), capture of
Calpee, action before and capture of Gwalior. Served as Commanding Engineer with Colonel Liddell's Column
in Bundlekund in August September and October 1858, and also with Colonel Meade's Column in Central India
in February March and April 1859, clearing the jungles and in the pursuit and capture of Tantia Topee (Medal
with Clasp, and Brevet of Major).
'" Colonel Donnelly served throughout the Eastern campaign of 1854-53, including the battles in the Crimea,
K-'ege and fall of Sebabto-pol (Medal with Clasps, Knight of the Legion of Honor, and Turkish Medal).
