7'88 Civil Decorations for Gallantry. — Details of the Avjards.
have borne Captain Holmes's great weight. Captain McRae was accordingly let down by means of a four-strand
tent rope, and on reaching the water found the soldier practically insensible ; he therefore decided to go up with
him. Captain Holmes was at the head of the rope, and his strength enabled him to lift both completely. After
hauling up about 10 or 15 feet, the rcpe broke, precipitating Captain McRae and his charge to the bottom of the
•well. A second attempt was made, and both were brought to the surface. The depth of the well was 88 feet, of
which 12 feet was water. It was quite dark at the time. With reference to this case, the following divisional order
by the Duke of Connaught was issued to the troops in his command:— "His Royal Highness the Major General
Commanding, having been made acquainted with the circumstances connected with the rescue from drowning in a
well at Rawul Pindee of Trumpeter S. Meehan, R.A., desires to record in divisional orders his deep sense of the
devotion and gallantry displayed on the occasion by Captains McRae and Holmes, 45th Sikhs, and to convey to those
â– officers his warm appreciation of their conduct, which reflects the greatest credit upon themselves, their regiment,
and Her Majesty's service generally. His Royal Highness will have much pleasure in bringing the circumstances of
the case to the notice of his Excellency the Commander-in-Chief."
82 Lieut. Macdonald has been awarded the Albert Medal of the 2nd Class in recognition of his gallantry in
assisting to save the life of a Sepov of the 27th Bengal Infantry, who, with certain Native officers and men of
that corps, had been overwhelmed in an avalanche near the summit of the Lowarai Pass on the 16th May 1898.
83 Captain W. T. MacDonnell was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for his efforts to
rescue a gentleman from drowning who had been carried out to sea while bathing on the 26th August 1890.
84 Major MacMahon-Creagh was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution for his
exertions in putting off in a canoe or curragh to the assistance of two men who had been left on board the
brigantine Henrietta, of Havre, which during a heavy gale of wind became a total wreck near Mutton Island on
the 1st December 1867.
83 Lieut. Macnaghten was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for rescuing two men
from drowning at Monk's Bridge, Yorkshire, on the 21st June 1895. He had to dive twice before he got the men
to bank, but succeeded in saving the lives of both.
IS 86 Captain Malcolm was awarded the Albert Medal of the 2nd class by the Queen for his efforts in attempting to
save the life of a comrade at Dalhousie, in India.
87 Deputy Surgeon General Manley was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for swimming to
the assistance of and rescuing from drowning a gunner of the Royal Artillery who had fallen overboard while
disembarking from a steamer in the Waitotara River, New Zealand, on the 21st July 1865.
80 Captain T. S. Marquis was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving a man from
drowning who had fallen from a boat into the water at Fort George, N.B., on the 8th July 1893. On the same
occasion Captain Marquis, with assistance, saved two other soldiers from drowning.
90 Second Lieut. Horace de C. Martelliwas awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving
a boy from drowning who had fallen into the water at Southsea on the 2nd August 1897,
91 Lieut. Mears was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving a lady from drowning
at Dymchurch, near Hythe, on the 26th August 18S4.
92 Captain Mercer was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having rescued a private from
drowning in the Irrawaddy River at Sindpngwai on the 6th May 1886.
93 Lieut. General Milman was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on the 25th June
1858, at Mahebourg, Mauritius, swum to shore and with two other gentlemen returned in a " piroque," or small
boat, and rescued five brother cfficers, who had been upset from a boat on a very rough night.
94 Lt.Colonel R. W. B. Mirehouse was awarded the Silver Medal of the Koyal National Lifeboat Institution for
his intrepidity in assisting to save the shipwrecked crew and passengers of the ship Lock Skiel, which had
stranded on Thorn Island, at the entrance to Milford Haven, on the 30th January 1894. Through the exertions of
Lt.Colonel Mirehouse and two of the lifeboat's crew, all the crew and passengers, 33 in number, were safely
brought to larid. Some of the rescued people were taken to the residence of Lt.Colonel Mirehouse, and cared for
by him and his family.
^ 5 Lieut. Money was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving a lady from
drowning at Aldeburgh, Suffolk, on the 9th September 1892.
96 Lieut. Nelson was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for attempting to rescue a
private of the Royal Marines who had falleuinto deep water at Plymouth on the 8th June 1895. Unfortunately
the effort was unsuccessful and the man was drowned.
97 Lt.Colonel Newington was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for jumping overboard in
fulldressat Great Yarmouth on the night of the 23rd September 1874, and rescuing a female from under the paddle-
wheel of the steamer and keeping another afloat sill a boat was lowered.
98 Major North was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving a private soldier
from drowning at Blackpool on the 23rd June 1895.
9J Captain Oldfield was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for jumping overboard from
H.M.S. Agincourt, and rescuing a lady who was in great danger of drowning at Liverpool, on the 9th September
c88r, by the capsizing of a boat; received a Silver Medal and Vote of Thanks from the Liverpool Shipwreck and
Humane Society for the same service.
300 Lieut. Orman was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for assisting to save a native
soldier who was in danger of drowning while attempting to swim across the Manipur River below Larmyan, on
the 19th March 1894. It took nearly an hour to restore the rescued man to consciousness.
102 Lieut Orr was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving frsm drowning a woman
who had attempted suicide by throwing herself into the river at Bishop's Bridge, Norwich, on the 3rd June 1894.
103 Major Ovens was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for endeavouring to save from
drowning a sergeant who had fallen into the river near Calcutta on the 4tu October, 1890.
105 Lt. Colonel Parsons was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution for his exer-
tions in rushing into the surf and attempting to rescue, at the risk of his life, the master of the brigantine
Industry, of Whitehaven, which was wrecked off Kingstown in a gale of wind on the 9th February 1861.
187 Captain Pratt was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on the evening of the
29th April 1880, jumped off the quay at Kinsale and rescued a lad who had fallen out of a boat and twice sunk.
109 Major Raveuscroft was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for assisting to save from
drowning two soldiers who had been capsized from a boat in Cork Harbour on the 1st September, 1891. Only one of
the men, however, was rescued.
110 Lt.Colonel Rich was awarded the Bronze Medal of the.Humane Society for saving a man from drowning at Bou-
logne on the 20th August 1867.
112 Colonel Sartoriuswas awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on the 29th June
1869, leaped from the pier at Broadstairs and assisted to rescue three girls who had been carried out by the tide
whilst bathing.
113 Captain Seely was awarded the Gold Medal of Honour by the French Government for saving the crew of the
brigantine Henri Leontine, shipwrecked off the Isle of Wight dn the :9th October 1891.
115 Captain Shakespear was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving a man from drown-
ing at Chittagong, India, on the 3rd April, 1890.
117 Colonel J. W. Smith was awarded the Silver Medal of the Roy al Humane Society for having, on the 27th Nov
E884, jumped into the Nile, near Semneh, with all his clothes on, and rescued a bandsman of his regiment, who
had fallen from the rock into the river from a height estimated at from 60 to 80 feet.
118 Colonel Snow was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society on the 6th June 1859 for having
plunged into the Serpentine at Hyde Park, and rescued a man who attempted suicide.
121 Lt.Colonel Stock was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving the lives of two
coolies in a lake near Chorore, Bombay, on the 29th January 1886.
122 Colonel Meysey-Thompson was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on the
4th February 1869, swum out to the rescue of Sir Charles Slingsby and W. Owen, who were unfortunately drowned
at Newby Ferry, Yorkshire.
121 Major Torrens was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution for his gallant
