45 Major Eyre was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on the 15th April 1877,
jumped into the river at Bhaugulpore with all his clothes on and rescued a gentleman who had been clasped by a
man while attempting to swim across the stream.
10 Lieut. H. D. Farquha.rson was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving the secre
tary to Sir George Tr\ on from drowning on the occasion of the sinking of H.M S. Victoria on the 22nd June 1893.
47 Lieut. Feilden was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having rescued two ladies
from drowning, 100 yards from the shore in a rough sea, atHayburn Wyke, Yorkshire, on the 23rd July 1895.
4S Captain H. 0. Keith Fraser was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving a boy
from drowning who had fallen into the Basingstoke Canal at Dogmersfield, Hampshire, on the 1st June 1890.
49 Captain French was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having plunged into the
sea off the West Coast of Africa and rescued a seaman who had fallen overboard from H.M.S. Barros'j, on the
13th November 1894.
50 Colonel Fry was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for hiving, on the 24th September
1879, rescued a lady from drowning at Boulogne-sur-Mer, and attempting to saveo'hers who were overwhelmed in
the surf while bathing ; also received a Gold Medal of Honour from the President of the French Republic for the
same service.
51 Captain Galloway was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving the life of a gentle
man who had been upset from his canoe on the Thames at Sunbury on the 26th Anr. 1885.
52 Major Gibb was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on the 27th June 1884,
jumped into the Nile at Esneh and rescued an interpreter of the Egyptian Army, who, while endeavouring to cross
the river, was overcome by the current and had sunk twice.
53 Colonel Goodwyn was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on the 29th Jnly
1884, jumped into the Red Sea with all his clothes on to try and save a boy who had fallen overboard from the
Nubia ; after being twenty minutes in the water, here known to be infested with sharks, Colonel Goodwyn was
picked up by the ship's boat without having succeeded in finding the lad.
54 Major H. C. B. Gray was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for assisting in saving from
drowning a man who had fallen into the River Lee, Cork, on the 18th January i83o. Major Gray was awarded
a Bronze Clasp to his Medal for assisting to save a man from drowning who had fallen into Bombay Harbour,
at the time infested with sharks, on the 2nd January 1S96.
55 Major Gretton was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having assisted in saving
a clergyman from drowning at Southwold, Suffolk, on the 29th August 1888
5C Major Grier has received the Albert Medal of the 2nd Class for the following service: — On the 26th August
1880, Lieut. Graham, 10th Regiment, was dying of diphtheria, when Surgeon Grier performed upon him the opera-
tion of tracheotomy, and, observing that no inspiration followed, at the imminent risk of his own life applied his
lips to the wound and by suction restored to the patient the power of breathing. Lieut. Graham's life was thus
saved for the time, although unfortunately on the following day the disease extended to his lungs and he died.
57 Lieut. C. P. G. Griffin was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for his efforts to save a
sepoy from drowning in a well at Saugor, Central Provinces on the 18th May 1893. Lieut. Griffin succeeded in
bringing the man to the surface, and he was "being drawn up when he fell again into the water. Lieut. Griffin,
again descended and got the man out, hut life was extinct.
58 Captain Hankey was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for assisting to save a
trooper who had been thrown by his horse into the River Thames at Chertsey on the 1st July 1897.
59 Captain Hardy was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for his efforts to rescue a police
constable from drowning at Nagpure. India, on the 10th February, 1889. Captain Hardy was, however, unsuccessful.
61 Lieut. Hardyman was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for assisting to save two girls
who had been surrounded by the tide at Plimont, Jersey, on the 29th September 1894.
62 Sir Reginald Clare Hart was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving the life of a
Frenchman from drowning in the harbour of Boulogne-sur-Mer, on the 27th July 1869, he himself having received
on this occasion several severe wounds of the head and face from striking, in a leap from the pier, some sunken
piles or rocks ; has also received for the same service a Medallion from the Mayor, in the name of the city of
Boulogne, and a Medal of Honour of the First Class from the President of the French Republic. Colonel Hart
has also been awarded by the Royal Humane Society a Silver Clasp for having, on the 15th December 1884, gone
to the rescue of a gunner who was in imminent danger of drowning in the Ganges Canal at Roorkee, and whose
life he assisted in saving.
63 Lt.Colonel C. L. Harvey was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving two lives from
drowning when on duty as Deputy Assistant Quarter Master General disembarking the 4th Regiment from
H.M.S. Tamar at Qneenstown on the night of the 4th August 1874.
64 Lt.Colonel H. De la M. Hervey was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having,
on the roth April 1879, rescued a duffadar of the 1st Punjab Cavalry who had been carried away from his horse
by the force of the current on the River Ariandah, near Candahar.
65 Major Hodder was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving a native of Mauritius
in Port Louis Harbour on the 10th May 1886.
66 Captain Davidson- Houston was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for his efforts to-
rescue a man from drowning in the New River, British Honduras, on the 1st July 1896. The water was 30 feet
deep, and there were alligators in the river.
67 Captain Hovell was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving a soldier from
drowning in a lake at Poona On tne 21st September 1891.
68 Lt.Colonel Hunt was awarded the Silver Medal of the Royal Humane Society for jumping into the River
Liffey at Dublin on the nth July 1857, and rescuing Joseph Ward from drowning.
70 Lt. General Le Cocq was awarded the Silver Medal of the Shipwrecked Fishermen and Mariners' Royal Benevo-
lent Society for gallant conduct on the occasion of the wreck of the transport Julia at Kurrachee, Scinde, on the-
30th of June 1857.
71 Captain Le Marchant was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on the 8th July
1884, saved Lieut. S. B. Graham from drowning in the Nile at Assouan.
72 Major Lemon was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for having, on the 20th August
1880, jumped into the sea at Clontarf, near Dublin, and by great exertions brought back to his boat a gentleman
who was being carried away by the tide in a sinking state.
73 Lieut. C. S. D. Leslie was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving a native from
drowning in a tank near Shera, Punch Mehals, India, on the 29th December 1892.
75 Sir William Lockhart was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for jumping into the water
with all his clothes on and, with the assistance of Lieut. M. dementi, of the Bengal Staff Corps, rescuing two-
women who had been upset from a boat on the Morar Lake, Gwalior, on the 26th December 1869.
76 Captain Logan was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for assisting to save three ladies
from drowning at Pentire, near Newquay, Cornwall, on the 13th August 1878.
77 Major Lovett was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for sa.ving from drowning a
hoy who had fallen into the River Thames from the Chelsea Embankment, and been carried about 150 yards by
the tide, on the 7th September 1891.
78 Captain Lyle was awarded the Bronze Medal of the Royal Humane Society for saving a coolie from drowning
in a tank at Madras on the 12th April 1891.
79 Colonel M'Calmont was awarded the Silver Medal ofthe Royal Humane Society forsavinganian from drown-
ing at Kingstown Harbour on the 18th July 1881, he having jumped from the pier into the sea, a distance of 26
feet.
81 Major McRae was awarded the Silver Medal and the Stanhope Gold Medal of the Royal Humane Society for
the following act: — At 5 a.m. on the 5th of October 1886, a trumpeter of the Royal Artillery fell into a well at Rawul
Pindee. Captain Holmes, Captain McRae, and others proceeded to the spot, and let down a well rope of sufficient
length to reach the soldier, and capable of sustaining him for a time. Both Captain McRae and Captain Holmes
volunteered to go down, but as the former was a light weight it was decided that he should make the trial, Captain
Holmes demurring, as he wished to undertake the risk himself. The rope being very weak, it could not possible
