181 Major General W. B. Cumberland served with the expedition to the Meeranzaie Valley and Upper Koorum
in 1856, and with that into the Bozdar Hills in 1857 (Medal with Clasu).
192 Major General W. H. Cuming served in the Burmese war of 1852-53 as Assistant Field Engineer (Medal with Clasp
for Pegu). Served in the Crimea with the Turkish Contingent in 1855-56 (Turkish Medal, and 4th Class of the Med-
jidie). Served with the Saugor Field Division in quelling the Indian mutiny of 1857-59, and was present at the affair
of Kubraie, battle of Banda, attack on Jounpore, surrender of Kirwee, action of Pungattie ; subsequently with
Colonel Nott's Field Force in pursuit of Feroze Shah and other rebels in 1859 (Medal with Clasp for Central India).
193 Major General G. G. Cunlifle served as a volunteer in the Nynee Tal Militia, raised for the protection of that
place, from 3rd June to 26th Dec. 1857. and assisted in the surprise and defeat of a body of rebels belonging to Khau
Bahadoor Khan that had occupied Huldwaree. Commanded a Detachment of the Kemaon Levy at the action of
Churpoorah, and a portion of a Field Force at the action of Surpoorah, succeeding to the command of the Force on
Capt. S. Brown being severely wounded— charger disabled by sword cuts (thanked by the Governor General and
the Commander in Chief for gallant conduct, Medal).
194 Major General R. H. Cunliffe was employed in suppressing the insurrection in the Pariah Kimedy district
in 1856-57.
196 Major General P. S. Cunningham served in the Southern Mahratta campaign in 1844-45, and was present at
the taking of the heights in front of and occupation of Budderghur.
198 Major General J. A. Dalzell served with the 53rd Regiment in the Punjaub campaign in 1849, including the
battle of Goojerat (Medal with Clasp). Served as Adjutant in the campaign of 1851-52 against the hill tribes on
the Peshawur Frontier (Medal with Clasp). Indian campaign of 1857-59, including the action of Kbodagunge and
entry into Futtehghur, passage of the Gogra at Fyzabad on 29th November, commanded the skirmishing Com-
panies of the 53rd at the action of Toolsepore, minor affairs, commanded attacking Companies of 53rd. at the storm-
ing and destruction of Bungeon — mentioned in despatches (Medal, and Brevet of Major).
199 Major General C. C. Dandridge served in the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, and was present at. the 1st and 2nd
siege operations before Mooltan, including the attack on the enemy's outposts on the 9th and 12th September,
action of Soorjkhoond, and storm and capture of the city and surrender of the fortress (Medal with one Clasp).
200 Major General F. F. Daniell served in the Egyptian war of 18S2 with the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders
(Medal, and Khedive's Star) ; in the Soudan Expedition in 1S84 with the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders,
and was present in the engagements at El Teb and Temai (3rd Class of the Medjidie, two Clasps); and in the Nile
Expedition in 1884-85 with the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders (Clasp).
202 Major General S. Darling served in the Crimea as Deputy Assistant; Quarter Master General 1st Division
subsequent to the fall of Sebastopol from October 1855 to the 1st May 1856.
202 Major General R. L. Dashwood served in the Afghan war in 1879-80, and took part in the march to Candahar
with the force under Major General Phayre (Medal).
203 Major General W. Daunt served in the Crimea from 27th Nov. 1854, including the siege and fall of Sebastopol,
and assault on the Cemetery on the 18th June (Medal with Clasp, 5th Class of the Madjidie, and Turkish Medal).
Served in the Afghan war in 1879-80 in command of the 2nd Battalion 9th Regiment, and accompanied Brigadier
General Charles Gough in the advance to Cabul in December 1879; ua. July 1880 was appointed to command a
Brigade at Cabul with the rank of Brigadier General, which he held till the conclusion of the war (mentioned its
despatches, CjB., Medal with Clasp).
2( " Major General A. Davidson served in the Indian Mutiny campaign in 1S57-58 as Field Engineer Rajpootana
Field Force and Staff Officer of Engineers, and was present at the capture of Awah (Medal with Clasp).
205 Major General A. H. Davidson served in suppression of the Indian Mutiny, including the actions of the 30th and
31st May 1857 on the Hindun, battle of Budleekeserai (severely wounded 1, and battle of Bareilly (Medal with Clasp).
Served throughout the Hazara and Black Mountain campaign in 1868 (Medal with Clasp).
206 Major General L. M. Davies served with the Persian Expeditionary Force in 1857 on its march to Borazjoon,
at the battle of Khooshab, and at the capture of Mohumra (Medal with Clasp) . Served in the Deccan against the
rebel Bheels in 1857; present at the engagements of Shumshapoor and Mahadeoghur (Indian Mutiny Medal).
2 °7 Major General G. F. de Berry served with the 24th Regt. in the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, including the pas-
sage of the Chenab, and battles of Sadoolapore, Chillianwallah (slightly wounded), and Goojerat (Medal with two
Clasps). Served in India during the mutiny of 1857-58 ; commanded the station of Murree (Punjaub) when attacked
by hillmen on the night of 1st Sept. 1857, and during proceedings of the three following days. In Nov. 1857 raised,
under orders of Sir John Lawrence, at Lahore a Battalion of Sikhs 1,200 strong, and proceeded to North-Western
Provinces with it in Jan. 1858; was attached to Maxwell's Column and present at engagements at Ooryah and
Sheerghurghat and at the taking of Calpee (Medal with Clasp for Central India).
208 Major General R. de Bourbel served in the Bhootan Expedition in 1S64-65 as Field Engineer (Medal with
Clasp). Served in the Afghan war in 1878-79 (Medal).
209 Major General H. De Brett served in the Indian Mutiny campaign in 1857, and was present at the siege of Delhi
(Medal with Clasp). Served with the Naga Hills Expedition in 18S0 (Medal with Clasp). Served in the Afghan
war in 1880 with the Khyber Line Force (Medal).
210 Major General W. H. Deedes served with the Burmese Expedition in 1885-S6 in command of the 1st Bat-
talion Rifle Brigade, and was severely wounded in an engagement near Poiboi on the 13th November (DSO., and
Medal with Clasp) .
213 Major GeneralJ. De Havilland served in the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 (save the interval between 1st
March and 6th Sept. 1855), including the battles of Alma and Balaklava, and siege of Sebastopol (Medal with three
Clasps, Brevet 0; Major, and Turkish Medal).
211 Major General H. G. De la Fosse served in the Artillery at the siege of Cawnpore in 1857 under Major General
Sir Hugh M. Wheeler (mentioned in despatches and allowed to reckon one year's extra service) . Served in the Artil-
lery with the Force under Major Generals Havelock and Outram, and present at the crossing into Oude, actions of
Mungarwar and Alumbagh, and entry into Lucknow ; commanded two guns in an advance piquet during the
subsequent defence of the Residency ; present at the retaking of Cawnpore (mentioned in despatches, received
the thanks of the Governor General in Council, Medal with two Clasps, a year's extra service). Served with the
Sikkim Field Force as Staff Officer under Colonel Gawler in 1861 (mentioned in despatches, received the appro-
bation of the Governor General in Council). Served in the Indian N.W. Frontier war of 1863, and was present
at the attack and capture of the Crag Piquet, the Conical Hill, and Umbeyla (mentioned in despatches, Medal with
Clasp).
215 Major General T. A. de Moleyns served in the Crimean campaign from July 1S55, including the siege and fall
of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal).
218 Sir Thomas Denuehy served in the Sonthal campaign of 1855-56, and commanded a detachment of two
Companies in action with the Insurgents at Chundkundra. Served also during the Indian Mutiny of 1857-58,
and commanded the Head Quarters of the Allahabad Military Police Battalion at the actions of Manickpore and
Gadhamaron (twice thanked by the Governor General, Medal).
219 Major General A. D. Denniss served in the Punjaub campaignin 1848-49 (Medal).
220 Major General J. Desborough served with the China Expedition of i860, and was present at Sinho, Tangku, cap-
ture of the Taku Forts, actions near Tangchow, and surrender of Pekin (Brevet of Lt.Colonel, Medal with two Clasps) .
221 Major General A. A. Des Vceux served in the Persian Expeditionary Force in 1857, at the bombardment and
capture of the forts of Mohumra and the pursuit, of the Persian army (Medal with Clasp) . Served with the Horse
Transport service in the China Expeditionary Force under Lieut.General Sir Hope Grant in i860, present as the
landing at Pehtang, action of Smho, capture of Tangkow, assault and capture of the Taku Forts; accom-
panied the advance of the army on Tien-Tsin and Pekin, including the battles of Chang-kia-Wan and Tungchow,
and occupation of Pekin (Medal with two Clasps).
224 Major General W. Denis de Vitre served in the Persian Expedition of 1S57 (Medal with Clasp). Served in the
latter part of the Afghan war from November 1880 as Brigadier General in command of nine batteries of Royal
Artillery (Medal).
225 si r prancis de Winton served the Crimean campaign from January 1855, including the siege and fall of
Sebastopol, in the Trenches with the siege train, and bombardments of 9th April and 6th and 17th June — wounded
(Medal with Clasp, Knight of the Legion of Honor, and Turkish Medal). Commanded the expedition sent agains*
the Yonnies, on the West Coast of Africa, in 1887-88 (CB., and Medal with Clasp),
