883 War Services of the Officers of the Militia Artillery and Engineers.
11 The Duke of Counaught. — For War Services, see Rifle Brigade, p. 356.
13 Sir Charles G-ough served throughout the Punjaub campaign of 1848-49, including the action of Ram-
nugger, passage of the Chenab, and battles of Sadoolapore, Chilianwalla, and Goojerat (Medal with two Clasps).
Served in the Indian Mutiny campaign of 1857-58 ; with the Guide Corps at siege and capture of Delhi ; com-
manded Guide Cavalry in affairs at Khurkonda on 15th, and Rhotuck on 17th and 18th August; engaged in the
cavalry affair iu. rear of the Camp on nth September. Served with Brigadier Shower's Column in the Delhi and
Jhujjur districts. Was engaged in the action of Narnole on the 16th November. Served with Hodson's Horse
at the actions of Gungeeree, Putteallee, Myhpoorie, and Shunisbabad (wounded). Commanded a squadron of
Hodson's Horse at the action of Meangunge ; present throughout the siege and capture of Lucknow (Medal with
two Clasps, Victoria Cross, and Brevet of Major); was awarded the jj<& — " 1. For gallantry in an affair at
Khurkowdah, near Rhotuck, on the 15th August 1857, in which he saved his brother, who was wounded, and
killed tiyo of the enemy. 2. For gallantry on the 18th of August when he led a Troop of the Guide Cavalry in a
charge, and cut down two of the enemy's sowars, with one of whom he had a desperate hand-to-hand combat.
3. For gallantry on the 27th January 1S5', at Shumshabad, where, in a charge, he attacked one of the enemy's
leaders, aud pierced him with his sword, which was carried out of his hand in the melee. He defended himself
with his revolver, and shot two of the enemy. 4. For trallantry on the 23rd February 1858, at Meangunge,
where he came to the assistance of Brevet Major O. H. St. George Anson, and killed his opponent, immediately
afterwards cutting down another of the enemy in the same gallant manner." Served with the Bhootan Expedi-
tion in 1864-65 (Medal with Claspb Served in the Afghan war of 1878-80, and was present at the attack and
capture of Ali Musjid, aud in the engagement at Futtehabad (mentioned in despatches) ; commanded a force of
all arms which proceeded from Gundamuck to the relief of Cabul in December 1S79 (mentioned in despatches), and
commanded a Brigadein the engagement atSaidabad 'mentioned in despatches, KCB., Medal with two Clasps).

16 Colonel Younger served in the Afghan war in 1878-79 with the Royal Horse Artillery (Medal).
17 Colonel Tottenham served- with the Scots Fusilier Guards in the Crimean campaign from 17th Jan. 1855
including the siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with one Clasp, 5th Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
19 Major Hillas served in the Zulu war of 1879, and was present in the engagement at TJlundi (Medal with
Clasp).

29 Lt. Colonel Edwards served in the expedition to the Soudan in 1885 with the Commissariat and Transport
Staff (Medal with Clasp, and Khedive's Star).
30 Sir James Hills- Johnes served in suppression of the Indian mutiny in i857-s8,includingtheactionsonthe3oth
and 31st May on the Hindun, battles of Budleekeserai and Nujjufghur, siege and capture of Delhifseverely wounded
on 9th July 1857), siege and capture of Lucknow, Rohilcund campaign, taking of Bareilly, and action of Mohumdee
(several times mentioned in despatches, also by the Governor General in Council, Victoria Cross, Medal with two
Clasps, and Brevet of Major) : was awarded the ~S€ " for very gallant conduct before Delhi, oirthe 9th July 1857,
in dof ending the position assigned to him in case of alarm, and for noble behaviour on the part of Major Tombs in
twice coming to his Subaltern's rescue, and on each occasion killing his man. — 'Yesterday, the 9th July 1857,
Lieutenant J. Hills was on piquet duty, with two guns, at the mound to the right of the camp. About 1 1 o'clock
a.m. there was a rumour that the enemy's cavalry were coming down on his post. Lieutenant Hills proceeded to
take up the nosition assigned in case of alarm, but, before he reached the spot, he saw the enemj' close upon his
guns before they had time to form up. To enable him to do this he boldly charged, single-handed, the head of the
enemy's column, cut down the first man, struck the second, and was then ridden down, horse and all. On getting
up and searching for his sword, three more men came at him (two mounted) ; the first man he woanded with his
pistol ; he caught the lance of the second in his left hand, and wounded him with his sword; the first man then came
on again, and was cut down; the third man (on foot) then came up, and wrenched the sword from Lieutenant Hills,
who fell in the struggle, and the enemy was about to cut him down when Major Tombs, who had gone up to visit
his two guns, saw what was going on, rushed in and shot the mau and saved Lieutenant Hills. By this time the
enemy's cavalry had passed by, and Major Tombs and Lieutenant Hills went to look after the wounded men, when
one of the enemy passed with Lieutenant Hills' pistol ; be first cut at Lieutenant Hills who parried the blow, and he
then turned on Major Tombs, who received the blow in the same manner. His second attack onthe Lieutenant was
more successful, as he was cut down with a bad sword-cut on the head, and would have been, no doubt, killed, had
not Major Tombs rushed in and put his sword through the man.' — Extract from Despatch of Lt. Colonel M. Mackenzie,
Commanding 1st Brigade of Horse Artillery, dated Camp near Delhi, 10th July 1857, and published in the Supplement of the
London Gazette ofi$th January 1S58." Commanded the 8-inch Mortars in the Abyssinian campaign from the 6th
Feb. 1868, and was present at the capture of Magdala (mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Lt.Colonel, and Medal).
Commanded the Peshawur Mountain Battery throughout the Looshai Expedition, Chittagong Column, 1871-72
(mentioned in despatches, CB., Medal with Clasp) . Served in the Afghan war of 1878-80, and was present at the
occupation of Candahar and Khelat-i-Ghilzie, in the engagement at Charasiab on the 6th October 1879 (mentioned
in despatches), in the occupation of Cabul, and in the operations around Sherpore as Assistant Adjutant General of
the Candahar Field Force (mentioned in despatches) ; was afterwards appointed Military Governor of the city of
Cabul and Commander of a portion of the line of defences at Sherpore and of the 3rd Division of the Northern
Afghanistan Field Force (received the thanks of both Houses of Parliament, KCB. and Medal with two Clasps).
35 Colonel Brooksbank served the Eastern campaign of 1854-55 with the 381m Regiment, and was preseut at the
battle of Inkerman, siege and fall of Sebastopol, including the repulse of a sortie on the 21st December, attack
and occupation of the Cemetery (Medal with two Clasps, 5th Class of the Medjidie. and Turkish Medal).
36 Colonel Lega.rd served in' the Zulu war in 1879 as Acting Deputy Assistant QuarLer Master General to the
istDivision (Medal with Clasp).
37 Colonel Lewes served with the Buffs at the siege of Sebastopol in 1855, and commanded the covering party of
the Buffs at the assault of the Redan on the 8th Sept. (Medal with Clasp, Brevet of Major, Knight of the Legion of
Honor, jth Class of the Medjidie, and Turkish Medal).
38 Lt.Colonel G. S. Jones served in the Afghan war in 1879-80, and was present in the engagement at Girishk, at
the defence of Candahar (mentioned in despatches), and at the battle of Candahar (Medal with Clasp).
40 ColcnelLewis served with the 5th Dragoon Guards in the Crimean campaign iu 1854-55, including tho battles
of Balaklava and Inkerman, battle of the Tchernaya, and siege of Sebastopol (Medal with three Clasps, Turkish
War Medal, and 5th Class of the Medjidie).
12 Lord Tredegar served in the Eastern canrnaign in 1854-55 with the 17th Lancers, and was presentat the battle
of Balaklava (Medal with Clasp).
43 Lord Raglan served in the Afghan war in 1879-80, and took part in the march to Candahar with the force
under Major General Phayre (mentioned in despatches, Medal).
44 Major Lindsay served in the Boer war of 1881. Served in the Soudan campaign in 1885, and was present
in the engagement at the Tofrek zereba (Medal with two Clasps, and Khedive's Star).
48 Major Baskerville served iu the Afghan war in 18S0 with the 51st Light Infantry, and took part with the
second expedition into the Lughman Valley including the engagement at Nargosi (Medal). Served with the Nile
Expedition in 1885 on the Commissariat and" Transport Staff.
