1407 Lieut.Colonels Retired on Full or Retired Pay or on a Pension. — War Services.
1 Lt.Colcmel S. Acklom served with the 88th Regiment throughout the Kafir war of 1877-78, including the
affair at Draaibosch (Medal with Clasp). Served hi the Afghan war in 18S0 with the Field Commissariat (Medal).
2 Lt.Colonel C. H. E. Adamson was employed on civil duty during the Burmese Expedition in 1885-S9 (received'
the thanks of the Government of India, mentioned in despatches, Medal with two Clasps).
3 Lt.Colonel R. I. Adamson served with the 18th Royal Irish in the Crimea at the siege and final bombardment of
Sebastopol and until the end of the Russian war. During the winter of 1855-56 acted as Adjutant to the whole
of the duty men of the Royal Irish Regiment ; was employed upon the destruction of the Naval Docks of
Sebastopol under the superintendence of Sir Lothian Nicholson and Sir Gerald Graham, and under the tire of the
Russian Northern Forts across the Harbour (Medal and Clasp, and Turkish Medal). Served in India in pursuit
of the rebels in the Mutiny, with the Field Force under General Beatson received the thanks of Sir Hu°-h Rose
Served in Afghan war in 1880 (Medal.)
1 Lt.Colonel H. B. Adcock served with the 6th Regiment in the Hazara campaign of 1868, including the subsequent
operations in the Black Mountain (Medal with Clasp).
5 Lt.Colonel R. L. Agassiz.— See Civil Decoratious for Gallantry, p. 1162.
6 Lt.Colonel G. A. Agnew served with the 90th Light Infantry during the Indian campaign of 1857-5S, and was
present with Havelock's Column at the actions of the 21st and 23rd Sept., relief and subsequent defence of Luck-
now (wounded) 17th Oct., defence of the Alumbagh by Outram, campaign in Oude, and final capture of Lucknow
(Medal with two Clasps, and a year's service).
7 Lt.Colonel W. A. Aitchison was present with the 69th Regiment during the repulse of an incursion of Fenians
into Canada in May 1870 (Medal).
9 Lt.Colonel W. G. Alexander served with the 93rd Highlanders in the Crimea from the 14th July 1S55, includ-
ing the siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal). Served also in the Indian campaign
of 1857-58, including the relief of Lucknow by Lord Clyde with assaults on the Secundrabagh and Shahnujuf,
battle of Cawnpore on 6th Dec. 1S57 and pursuit to Seraighat, action of Khodagunge, storming of the Begum
Kotee and capture of Lucknow, attack on the fort at Rohea and campaign of Rohilcund, including actions of Alle-
gunge and Bareilly ; served in the Oude campaign of 185S-59, including the actions of Pusgawn and Russulpore,
attack on fort at Mithowlee and action of Bis wah (Medal with two Clasps). Served with the Force under Sir John
Garvock at Unibeyla on theN.W. Frontier of India in Nov. and Dec. 1S63 (Medal with Clasp).
10 Lt.Colonel B. M. Allen served in the Afghan war in 1879 (Medal), and in the Mahsood Wuzeeree Expedition in
1881 attached to the Signalling Department. Served with the Zhob Valley Expedition in 1890.
10 t Lt.Colonel Allen served in the South African War in 1S99-1000.
11 Lt.Colonel J. G. Anderson served with the 171I1 Regiment as Adjutant in the Afghan war of 1S73-79, and was
present at the capture of Ali Musjid and in the expeditions into the Bazar Valley (mentioned in despatches, Medal
with Clasp). Served in the Burmese Expedition in 188S-89 with 2nd Battalion Leicestershire Regiment (Medal with
Clasp).
12 Lt.Colonel R. V. Allen served in the China Expedition. Also with the R. M. Brigade in the Crimea in 1855, and
at tie surrender of Kinbourn (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal).
12 t Lt.Colonel W. H. Allen served throughout the Egyptian war of 1S82, and was present at the surrender of
Kafr Dowar and Damietta (Medal, and Khedive's Star). Served in the operations in Zululand in 1888.
13 Lt.Colonel S. V. Alston served in the Soudan campaign in 1884-85, took part in tne defence of Suakin, and
was present in the engagements at Hasheen and the Tofrek zereba, at that near Tofrek on the 24th March and at
the destruction of Teinai (mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Lt.Col., Medal with two Clasps, and Khedive's Star).
14 Lt.Colonel M. A. Alves served in the Afghan war in 1879-80, and was present in the engagement at Char-
asiah on the 25th April r8So (mentioned in despatches. Medal.).
15 _ Lt.Colonel \V. T . Anderson served as Superintendent of Volunteers in the Transvaal during the operations
against Sekukuni in 1878, and with the 80th Regiment on the Swazi border in 1879, an <l during the invasion of Zulu-
land and the engagement at Ulundi (Medal with Clasp).

17 Lt.Colonel E. F. Angelo served with the 28th Regt. in the Crimea from August 1855, including the siege and
fall of Sebastopol (Medal with Clasp, and Turkish Medal).
Iv t Lt.Colonel J. W. E. Angelo served in the Afghan war in 1878-79, and look part in the advance to Candahar
and Khelat-i-Ghilzie (Medal). Served with the Burmese Expedition in 1886-87 (Medal with two Clasps). Served
with the Chitral Relief Force under Sir Robert Low in 1895 (Medal with Clasp).
ls Lt.Colonel R. C. Annesley served throughout the second phase of the Ashanti war in 1874 attached to the
42nd Highlanders, and was present at the battle of Amoaful (slightly wounded), captura of Becquah, battle of
Crdahsu and capture of Coomassie (Medal with Clasp). Served throughout the operations of the Soudan Frontier
Field Force in 1885-86 with the Cameron Highlanders, and was present at Kosheh during its investment, and in
the engagement at Giniss (Medal, and Khedive's Star).
lc; t Lt.Colonel H. D. Armstrong served in the Boer war of 1881; Served with the 1st Battalion of the West Kent
Regiment throughout the Egyptian war of 1882 (Medal, and Khedive's Star). Served in the Nile Expedition inr.884—
85 with the 1st Battalion of the West Kent Regiment (mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Major, Clasp).
19 Lt.Colonel B. V. Arbuckle served with the force under Brigadier General Chamberlain against the Mahsood
Wuzeerees in April and May i860, and was present at the forcing of the Burrarah Pass, and destruction of Makeem
(Medal with Clasp). During the Afghan war in 1879-80 he was emnloyed on Commissariat duty (Medal).
19+ Lt.Colonel W. C. W. Arbuthnott served in the Afghan war of 1878-80 (Medal).
50 Lt.Colonel F. H. Armstrong served in the New Zealand war in 1864-66 (Medal). Served in the Egyptian
war of 1882 (Medal, and Khedive's Star). Also served in the Soudan campaign in 1885 (Clasp).
-"■(Lt.Colonel F. W. Archer served on the Red River Expedition of 1870. Served in the Afghan war in 18S0
(Medal). Served with the 3rd Battalion 60th Rifles in the Boer war in 1881. Served with the 3rd Battalion
King's Royal Rifle Corps in the Egyptian war of 1882, and was present in the reconnan-sance in force from
Alexandria on 5th August, in the engagement at Tel-el-Mahuta, in the action at Kassasin (9th September),,
and at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir (Medal with Clasp, and Khedive's Star).
21 Lt.Colonel .1. A. Armstrong served with the Bhootan Expedition in 1S64-65 as Assistant Field Engineer
(Medal with Clasp), and with the Hazara Field Force as Assistant Field Engineer throughout the operations
of 1868; had charge of the Field Telegraph and was mentioned in General Wilde's despatch for having rapidly
constructed and worked the Telegraph Line (Clasp).
22 Lt.Colonel M. Armstrong served in the Afghan war in 1879-80 with the Khyber Field Force (Medal).
2-t Colonel G. Astell served in the Zulu war in 1879-81 and was present at the action of Ginginhlovo and the re-
lief of Etshowe (Medal with Clasp). Served also in the Transvaal campaign ; also with the Natal Field Force.
23 Lt.Colonel C. H. Atchison served in the Afghan war in 1S78-79, and was present at the capture of the Peiwar
Kotal (mentioned in despatches, Medal with Clasp). Served in the operations in Zululand in 1888.
24 Lt.Colonel A. G. Godwin-Austen served in the Kafir war in 1877-78, and was present in the engagement at
Taba ka Udoda and in the operations in the Perie Bush — wounded (Medal with Clasp).
25 Lt.Colonel Aytoun served in the Southern Mahratta carnraign of 1844-45, including the siege and capture of
the forts of Punel'la, Pownghur, Monohur, and Munsuntosh. Served in suppression of the Indian Mutiny 1858-59,
including the pursuit of Tantia Topee, actions with Bheels, siege of Dwarka, and action of Somnassa (Medal).
