667 Major General II. G. Robison served with the 7th Bombay N.I. daring the campaign in the Southern Mahratta
Country in 1844-45 ; as a volunteer under Brigadier Hampton in His Highness the Nizam's service at Go wree against
the Rohillas (received the thanks of Government). Served in the cavalry of the Turkish Contingent from its
formation to the day it was disbanded, a great part of the time as Deputy Assistant Quarter Master General (4th
Class of the Medjidie, and the Turkish War Medal). Served in the Indian Mutiny campaign, including the siege
and capture of Ratghur, action at Barodea, relief of Saugor, capture of Garrakota, forcing of the Muddenpore Pass,
siege snd storm of Jhansi, and the battle of the Betwa(Medal with Clasp for Central India, and specially mentioned
in despatches).
663 Major General H. G. Robley served with the 68th Light Infantry in the New Zealand war in 1864-66 and was
present at the attack on Gate Pah (Medal).
670 Major General W. Rooke served in the Crimean campaign from August 1S55, including the siege and fall of
Sebastopol (Medal wiih Clasp, and Turkish Medal 1.
675 Major General J. E. Ruck-Keene served in the Crimean campaign of 1854-55, including the battle of
Inkerman, siege and fall of Sebastopol (wounded) , in the Trenches with the siege train as Adjutant left attack
(mentioned in despacthes), and bombardments of i7thOctober, 9th April, and 6th and 17th June, and was with,
the Light Brigade at Eupatoria (Medal with two Clasps, Knight of the Legion of Honor, and Turkish Medal).
676 Major General J. A. Ruddell served with the 1st Battalion Royals throughoutthe Eastern campaignof 1854-55
including the battles of Alma and Inkerman, siege and fall of Sebastopol (Medal with three Clasps, Turkish Medal ,
and Knight of the Legion of Honor). Served with tbe 87th Fusiliers during the Indian Mutiny in 1857-58 (Medal).
Served in the Afghan war in 1878-79, and took part with the second expedition into the Bazar Valley under Lieut
General Maude (mentioned in despatches, Medal).
677 Major General J . Ruggles served with the expedition under General Wheeler against Kote Kangra in 1846
Was present at the defence of the Residency at Lucknow from June to Nov. 1857 (Medal with Clasp, and a year's
service). Commanded the 19th Bengal Native Infantry in the BhoJtan campaign iu 1865, including the assault
and capture of the Bala Stockades (Brevet of Major, Medal with Clasp).
631 Major General V. Ryan served with the 64th Regiment in the N.W. Provinces in suppressing the mutiny in
1857-58; present in the operations at Cawnpore under General Windham (acting as his Aide de Camp), defence
of Cawnpore and defeat of the Gwalior mutineers, and actions of Kalee Nuddee and Kerkeroulie, and capture of
Bareilly (Medal).
685 Major General W. F. Sandwith served with the 1st Brigade Central India Field Force in 1S58 ; was present
at tbe siege and storm of Jhansi (Medal with Clasp). Served in the Afghan war in 1880 (Medal).
692 Major General J. W. Scott served on the China Expedition of 1857-59, including the blockade of the Canton
river, the landing before and capture of the city, also at the attack and capture of the bridge and village of
Shetksing (Medal with Clasp). Sewed wita the Battalion of Royal Marines in the Egyptian war of 1882, and
was present at the occupation of Port Said on the 21st August in command of the detachment of Royal Marines,
also in the engagement at Tel-el-Mahuta, the two actions at Kassasin, and the battle of Tel-el-Kebir (men-
tioned in despatches, Brevet of Lt.Colonel, Medal with Clasp, 4th Class of the Osmanieh, and Khedive's Star.)
693 Major General T. L. Scott served in the Burmese war in 1852-53, and was present at the investment of
Pegu in January 1853 (Medal with Clasp for Pegu). Was engaged in suppressing the mutiny in Bengal with Major
General Whitlock's Force in iS58-59,and present at the surrender of the rebel Narrain Rao of Kirwee; commanded
a company of his regiment at the affair of Jignee (Medal with Clasp).
698 Major General H. Shewell served in the campaign in the Southern Mahratta Country in 1844-45, and at the
capture of Samunghur.
699 Major General T. H. Sibley served at the siege and capture of Delhi in 1857 (mentioned in despatches,
thanked by Government, Brevet of Majoi', Medal with Clasp).
700 Major General H. T. Siborne served in the Kaffir war of 1851-53 (Medal). Also in the expedition against the
Basutos in Dec. 1852, having charge of the Pontoons by which the troops crossed the Orange and Caledon Rivers.
Present at the action of the Berea, and mentioned in General Orders.
7,11 Major General L. H. Sibthorpe served in the Indian Mutiny campaign in 1857, an d was present in the action
at Ambapawnee (Medal). Served in the Afghan war in 1879-80, and took part in the march to Candahar with the
force under Major General Phayre (Medal).
704 Major General R. S. Simonds served in the Punjaub campaign in 1848 (Medal). Served in the campaign on
the North- West Frontier of India in 1854-55 (Medal with Clasp).
705 Major General W. H. R. Simpson served in the Crimean campaign of 1854 and up to June 1S55, including the
battle of Inkerman, siege of Sebastopol, in the Trenches with the siege train, and bombardments of the 17th Oct.
and 9th April (Brevet of Major, Medal with two Clasps, Knight of the Legion of Honour, and Turkish Medal).
709 Major General C. B. L. Smith was actively employed during the late rebellion in India. In Dec. 1857 with a
party of 50 troopers he entered Sanakhan hills, and surprised the main body of the insurgents — 500 matchlock
men — and captured their leader, the rebel chief of Sanakhan, on whose head a price had been fixed. On the
night of the 18th Jan. 1858 a portion of tbe troops stationed at Raepore mutinied, murdered the Sergeant Major,
and seized the post guns. The only English Officers present were Captains Smith and Rybat, and the nearest
trustworthy force was 180 miles distant, yet before the morning dawned these two Officers had suppressed the
mutiny, and seized all the known mutineers, including the whole detachment of Artillery, who three days after-
wards were all hanged in the presence of their comrades. From March to the end of June he commanded a
Detachment of troops against the rebels in the Sumbulpore district, with whom he had various affairs. For his
services rendered in 1857-58 he was thanked by the Governor General in Council, was mentioned in Lord
Canning's mutiny despatch, and received the expression of Her Majesty's gracious approbation (Medal). In
October and November i860 he was employed against the rebels in the Manicghur Hills, and drove them from
all their detences, completely dispersing the enemy.
710 Sir C. Holled Smith served with the 3rd Battalion 60th Rifles in the Zulu war from April to September 1879
(Medal with Clasp). Also served in the Boer war of 1881, and was present in the engagements at Laing's Nek and
the Ingogo River (mentioned in despatches). Served with the 3rd Battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps in the Egyp-
tian war of 1882, and was present in the reconnaissance in force from Alexandria on 5th August, in the engage-
ment at Tel-el-Mahuta, the action at Kassasin (9th September), and at the battle of Tel-el-Kebir (mentioned in des-
patches, Brevet of Major, Medal with Clasp, and Khedive's Star). Served in the Nile Expedition in 1884-85
with the Egyptian Army, and was employed on the Lines of Communication; was afterwards Commandant ap-
Semneh (mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Lt.Colonel, Clasp). Served in the operations of the Soudan Fron-
tier Field Force in 1885-86. Commanded a Brigade during the operations near Suakin in December 1888 in-
cluding the engagement at Gemaizah (mentioned in despatches, Brevet of Colonel, Clasp). Commanded the force
during the operations in February 1891 including the capture of Tokar (Clasp to Khedive's Star, 2nd Class of the
Medjidie).
7 '1 Major General E. D. Smith served with the 95th Regiment the Eastern campaign of 1854, including the battles
of Alma and Inkerman, siege of Sebastopol, and sortie on 26th Oct.— wounded in the head in the Trenches 17th Oct.
(Medal with three Clasps, and Turkish Medal). Served in 1858 at the siege and capture of Awah and Kotah, battle
of Kota ka Serai, general action resulting in the capture of Gwalior, and recapture of the fortress of Chandaree in
May (Medal with Clasp).
716 Major General William Smith served in the Indian campaign of 1857-59, including the relief of Lucknow by
Lord Clyde, battle of Cawnpore on 6th Dec, actions of Serai Ghat (mentioned in despatches), Chanda, Um eerpore,
and Sultanpore, siege and capture of Lucknow, attack of the Moosabagh, and action of Barree; afterwards present
with various forces in pursuit of the enemy and watching the fords of the Gogra, and in the Trans-Gogra cam-
paign, including several small affairs on the Raptee and the frontier of Nepaul ( Medal with two Clasps). Served
in the New Zealand war in 1864 in command of a Detachment of Royal Artillery in the campaigns on "the Waikato
