4 <>2 Captain E. B. Towse served with the Chitral Relief Force under Sir Robert Low in 1895 with the 1st Battalion
Gordon Highlanders, including the storming of the Malakand Pass (Medal with Clasp). Served in the campaign
on the North West Frontier of India under Sir William Lockhart in 1898 with the Tirah Expeditionary Force with
the 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders (two Clasps). Served in the South African war of 1899-1900, and was present
with the Kimberley Relief Force at the engagement at Magersfontein — dangerously wounded (mentioned in des-
patches, 1 T 2T, Medal with three Clasps) ; was awarded the Victoria Cross for the following service : — u On the nth
December 1899, at the action of Magersfontein, Captain Towse was brought to notice by his Commanding Officer for his
gallantry and devotion in assisting the late Colonel Downman, when mortally wounded, in the retirement, and
endeavouring, when close up to the front of the firing line, to carry Colonel Downman on his back ; but finding this
not possible, Captain Towse supported him till joined by Colour-Sergeant Nelson and Lance-Corporal Hodgson. On
the 30th April 1900, Captain Towse, with twelve men, took up a position on Mount Thaba, far away from support.'
A force of about 150 Boers attempted to seize the same plateau, neither party appearing to see the other until they
were but 100 yards apart. Some of the Boers then got within 40 yards of Captain Towse and his party, and called
on him to surrender. He at once caused his men to open fire and remained firing himself until, severelywounded
(both eyes shattered), succeeding in driving off the Boers. The gallantry of this Officer in vigorously attacking
the enemy (for he not only fired, but charged forward) saved the situation, notwithstanding the numerical superiority
of the Boers."

24th Jan., including action at Spion Kop, 5th to 7th Feb., including action at Vaal Krantz, on Tugela Heights, including
the action at Pieter's Hill 27th Feb., Orange Free State in April and May, Cape Colony in May, Orange River Colony in
May, and the Transvaal in June 1900.

at the battle of Colenso, in the operations of the 21st to 24th Jan. 1900, including the action at Spion Kop ; took part
in the relief of Ladysmith, and was present in the actions at Vaal Krantz and Pieter's Hill (Medal with five Clasps):
«7 Captain Shortt served in the Nile Expedition in 1884-85 Tith the 1st Battalion Black Watch ; took part in operations
of the Rever Column under Major General Earle, and was present in the action of Kirbekan (Medal with two Clasps,
and Khedive's Star). Served in campaign on North West Frontier of India under Sir William Lockhart in 1897-98 with
the Tirah Expeditionary Force with the 1st Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers, and was present in the operations on the
Samana Range, against the Chamkanis, and in the Bara Valley — dangerously wounded (Medal with three Clasps). Served
in South African war in 1899-1901 on the Staff, and took part in operations in the Transvaal, west of Pretoria, July to
29th Nov. 1900, including actions at Fredcrickstad (Medal with three Clasps).
