(afterwards the British Division), and was present at the battles of the Atbara (mentioned in despatches) and
Khartoum (mentioned in despatches, DSO. British Medal, and Khedive's Medal with two Clasps). Served in the
South African war in 1899-1900, 1902 on the Staff, and was employed with the South African Light Horse: Took
took part in the operations in Natal in 1899, including action at Elandslaagte — severely wounded ; the relief of
of Ladysmith ; the operations in Lydenberg District, including Buller's march to Pilgrim's Rest; the operations in
Orange River Colony Jan. to 31st May 1902, and in Cape Colony Dec. 1901 to Jan. 1902 (four times mentioned in
despatches, Brevet of Major, Medal with seven Clasps, King's Medal with two Clasps). Served with the Somali
land Field Force in 1903-04, including march to Gulkayu from Obbia and fight at Jidballi (twice mentioned in
