Berkshire Regiment, and was present in the reconnaissance to Hasheen on the 1st February, in the engagements
at Hashecn and the Tofrek zereba, and in the subsequent advance to and burning of Temai (Medal with two
Clasps, and Khedive's Star). Served in the operations of the Soudan Frontier Field Force in 18S5-86.
*22 Captain J. E. Carter served in the South African war in 1895-1900, and took part in the operations at Paar-
dehcrg 16th to 27th February 1900 — wounded. '
427 Captain H. Cotton served in the Afghan war of 1S7S-S0, and was present in the engagement at Charasiah on
the 6th October 1879, and in the operations round Cabul in December 1879 ; accompanied Sir Frederick Roberts in
the march to Candanax, and was present at the battle of Caudahar (Medal with three Clasps, and Bronze Decoration).
428 Captain R. C. Johnston served as Civil Surgeon during the Zulu war in 1879 and the operations against
Sekukuni (Medal with Clasp). Served in the Egyptian war (it 1882 (Medal, and Khedive's Star) ; also served
with the Nile Expedition in 1884-85, and had charge ofthc Debbeh Field Hospital (Clasp).

Victoria Cross, and Knight of tin- Legion of Honor) : was awarded the >"iT " for going out on the 8th September
1855, under a heavy tire, in front of the fifth parallel, right attack, to a spot near the Redan (Sebastopol), where
Lieutenant and Adjutant Dyncley was lying mortally wounded, and for dressing his wounds in that dangerous
and exposed situation. This Officer was mentioned in General Sir James Simpson's despatch of the iStu September
T855, for his courage in going to the front, under a heavy fire, to assist the wounded." Served in the Indian
campaign of 1857-58, including the relief of Lueknow by Lord Civile, defeat ofthc Ownlior Contingent at Cawnpcra
siege and capture of Lueknow (Medal with two Clasps).
