*^* First edition of this Chronicle, which must not be confounded
with the Romance having the Cid for its hero. The prologue states
that it is taken from a manuscript cotemporary with the Cid, and
that Frey Juan de Velorado abbot of the house of Sant Pedro de
Cardeiia de orden y cougregacion de Sant Benito was commis¬
sioned to have it printed. The request to obtain the privilege is
dated 7 Oct. 1511, and is almost certain proof that this is the
earliest edition. Mr. Grenville's (now Br. Mus.), Mr. Huth's and
one other, are the only other copies known of this edition.
