382 HYMNS.
3 And shall my guilty fears prevail
To drive me from thy feet ?
Oh ! let not this dear refuge fail.
This only safe retreat.
4 Absent from thee, my guide ! my light L
Without one cheering ray :
Through dangers, fears, and gloomy night
How desolate my way !
5 Oh! shine on this, benighted heart,
With beams of mercy shine!
And let thy healing voice impart
A taste of joys divine.
382.
The Penitent pardoned.
1 OOV’REIGN Ruler, Lord of all,
° Prostrate at thy feet I fall:
Hear, Oh hear my ardent cry.
Frown not, lest 1 faint and die !
2 Vilest of the sons of men.
Worst of rebels I have been !
Oft abus’d thee to thy face.
Trampled on thy richest grace !
3 Justly might thy vengeful dart.
Pierce this broken, bleeding heart
Justly might thy kindled ire
Blast me in eternal fire.
4 But with thee there’s mercy found.
Balm to heal my ev’ry wound ;
Thou canst sooth the troubled breast,
Give the weary wand’rer rest.
' 5 Then my humble pray’r attend,
Show thyself the sinner’s friend;
Bid the sufFrer cease to mourn,
Bid the prodigal return !
