T. III.] HYMNS. 60,61
'hat holy book shall guide our youth.
And well support our age.
60.
The. Scriptures given by inspiration of God.
I 'rr'WAS by an order from the Lord
"*■ The ancient prophets spoke his word ;
;s His Spirit did their tongues inspire,
. And warm’d their hearts with heav’nly fire.
The works and wonders which they wrought
^Confirm’d the messages they brought;
The prophet’s pen succeeds his breath
| To save the holy words from death.
’ Great God, mine eyes with pleasure look
i( On the dear volume of thy book :
/There my Redeemer’s face I see,
i And read his name who dy’d for me.
I Let the false raptures of the mind
j Be lost and vanish in the wind;
' ,Here I can fix my hope secure,
( This is thy word, and must endure.
61.
The Inward Witness to Christianity. 1 John v. 10.
1 /QUESTIONS and doubts be heard no more;
Let Christ and joy be all our theme;
His Spirit seals his gospel sure
I To ev’ry soul that trusts in him.
& Jesus, thy witness speaks within:
The mercy which thy words reveal
j, Refines the heart from sense and sin,
And stamps its own celestial seal.
:3 ’Tis God’s inimitable hand
That moulds and forms the heart anew
j Blasphemers can no more withstand.
But bow and own thy doctrine true.
'hat holy book shall guide our youth.
And well support our age.
