Head VI. in Hell. 585
{ays the rich Man in Hell, Luke xvi. 24. Jam tor¬
mented (to wit, as one in the Pangs of Child¬
bearing) in this Flame. Ah! dreadful Pangs! horrible
Travel, in which both Soul and Body are in ^angs
together; helplefs Travel, hopelefs and endlefs !
The Word ufed for Hell, Matth. v. 22. and in
diverfe other Places of the New Teftament, pro¬
perly denotes the Valley of Hinnom ; the Name
being taken from the Valley of the Children of Hin¬
nom, in which was Sfophet (2 Kings xxiii 10.)
where Idolaters offered their Children to Moloch.
This is laid to have been a great brazen Idol, with
Arms like a Man’s: The which being heated by
Fire within it, the Child was fet in the burning
i Arms of the Idol, and, that the Parent might not
hear the Shrieks of the Child burning to Death,
they beat Drums in the Time of the horrible
Sacrifice ; whence the Place had the Name of tfo-
fhet. Thus the Exquijitenefs of the Torments in
Hell are pointed out to us. Some have endured
grievous Tortures on Earth, with a furprifing Ob-
ftinacy and undaunted Courage: But Men’s
Courage will fail them there, when they find them-
felves fallen into the Hands of the living God ;
and no Out-gate to be expected for ever. Tis true,
there will be Degrees of Torment in Hell: It frail
he more tolerable for tyre and Sidon, than for Cho-
razin and Bethfaida, Matth. xi. 21, 22. But the
lealt Load 01 Wrath, there, will be unfupportabie
for how can the H.art of the Creature endure, or
his Hands be ftrong. when God himfelf is a con-
fuming Fire to him r When the T’ares are bound
in Bundles lor the Fire, there will be Bundles of
covetous Perfons, 01 Drunkards, profane Swearers,
unclean Perfons, formal Hypocrites, Unbelievers
