A compound number may be reduced to a superior name
• reducing each of its parts, and taking the sum of the de-
nals ;.the best way to do which is thus:
Write the given numbers under each other, proceeding
derly from the least to the greatest name, for. dividends ;
aw a perpendicular line on the left of these, and on the
t of it write opposite to each dividend such a number, for
livisor,' as will reduce it to the next superior name ; then
gin with the upper division, and affix the quotient of each
the next dividend, as a decimal part of it, before it be
i nded, and the last sum will be the answer.
Examples.
1. Reduce 3/ 12s 6\d to the denomination of pounds.
