REDUCTION OF VULGAR FRACTIONS.
G1
Al. ‘ To reduce an integer to an equivalent fraction of a given
denominator.
Rule.
Multiply the integer by the given denominator, and the
roduct will be the numerator required.
Examples.
Reduce 7 to a fraction whose denominator shall be 4.
y-7 x 4 _ 28.
4 4
Reduce 5 to a fraction whose denominator shall be
| Reduce 13 to a fraction whose denominator shall be 121
V• To reduce a mixt number to an equivalent improper
fraction.
Multiply the integer by the denominator of the fraction }
> the product add the numerator; then the sum written
>ove the denominator will form the fraction required.
Examples.
Reduce'2^- to a fraction. '
2! _2*7 + 3_14 + 3_ 17
f 7 7 7
Reduce 12£ to a fraction.
Reduce lij® to a fraction.
. To reduce a compound fraction to an equivalent simple one.
Rule.
Multiply all the numerators together for the numerator,
id all the denominators together for the denominator of
ic simple fraction required.
i Note. If part of the compound fraction be an integer or a mixt num-
!r, reduce it to a fraction by one of the former cases.
. Examples.
Reduce \ of f of a of 5 to a simple fraction.
-of-!-of— 0f4-=l-2x3^
3 4 1 2x dx4x1
(hy omitting the com-
ten terms 1, 2, and 3) .
