Executive Council
THE Extraordinary Meeting of the Execu¬
tive Council of An Comunn Gaidhealach
was held in the Highlanders’ Institute,
Glasgow, on 18th June, 1955. Mr. Neil Shaw,
President, occupied the Chair.
The Chairman paid tribute to the life and
work of the following, who had recently passed
away, and who, in various ways had been
actively associated with the Gaelic movement—
Mr. Angus MacMillan, Mr. Donald Cameron,
and the Rev. Alexander Macdonald, Ardchattan.
The Finance Committee reported that the
Income and Expenditure Account for the year
1954-55 showed a deficit of over £1,000, as
compared with a surplus of almost £1,000 in the
previous year. This was largely due to there
being £2,000 less in the surplus from the
National Mod. It was noted that it takes
£4,500 a year to cover ordinary expenditure.
It was noted with satisfaction, that the Northern
Propaganda Sub-Committee has launched a
campaign to extend interest and solicit greater
support for An Comunn, in the hope that, in
time, the Northern Area might be able to provide
funds to meet the expenditure in the Area. It
was also noted with satisfaction that the
Governors of the Catherine McCaig Trust had
voted a grant of £100 and a guarantee of £100
towards the cost of the proposed Scottish
Gaelic edition of School Readers. It was
agreed to take steps to alter Bye-Law 46 so that
in future the financial year should run from 1st
April to 31st March.
The Education Committee reported that four
representatives of An Comunn had conferred
with officials of the Scottish Education Depart¬
ment in regard to the proposed Questionnaire
on Gaelic in Schools, and the next steps proposed
were explained. It was noted with regret that
the scheme for Gaelic Informal Education
had had to be suspended meantime, because
suitable persons willing to act as Organisers
were not at the moment available. Apprecia¬
tion was expressed of the support given to the
scheme by the Highland County Education
Committees concerned and the Scottish
Education Department. The Northern Edu¬
cation Sub-Committee reported favourably
on Gaelic continuation classes in the area, and
the Sub-Committee also had under discussion
the teaching of Gaelic in schools in the
Northern Area.
