A meeting of the Mod and Music Com¬
mittee was held recently, and four new
competitions were added to the syllabus, the
final edition of which is now published.
These are:—Solo with clarsach accompani¬
ment ; singing of one of three Lochaber songs
supplied from the office ; singing one of John
Compbell’s songs; and, to encourage the
revival of the less-known district songs,
several prizes are offered for the singing of
one of two such songs. The songs, words,
and music must be submitted for verifica¬
tion.
Gaelic bards have been wonderfully silent
on war matters; at least, little or nothing has
appeared in the public press. The South
African War produced several good poems
and bright ditties. Mr. T. D. MacDonald,
Oban, has, however, given us two nice
volumes, making up for the inertia of the
other bards. These volumes make interest¬
ing reading, and Mr. MacDonald deserves
every encouragement.
It is proposed to hold a Provincial Mod
at Ullapool in August, and for this purpose
Mr. Colin MacLeod is teaching classes at
Coigeach and Achiltebuie. An appeal is
being made locally for funds to provide
prizes and a generous response is anticipated.
Mr. MacLeod has very successful classes at
Ullapool, and had a regular attendance of 40
seniors and 40 juniors
The condition of the Donnehkdh Ban
monument at Dalmally, which was damaged
by lightning some two years ago, is not in
keeping with the regard to his memory
which should be felt by Highlanders at home
or abroad, and it is gratifying that the Oban
Branch of An Comunn has taken the matter
in hand. An appeal is being made for
subscriptions, and donations may be sent to
the Secretary or Treasurer of the Oban
Branch or to myself at this office. The Oban
Branch is in communication with the
trustees of a fund instituted some twenty
years ago for the purpose of erecting a
monument to the Bard somewhere on the
West Highland Railway. The response did
not justify the proposers of this scheme in
proceeding with their object, and it was
resolved that the proceeds should be used for
the upkeep of the monument at Dalmally.
It is now proposed to hand the amount,
about £14, over to the Oban Branch as a
contribution to the fund now being raised.
The sum necessary for the needed repairs is
over £100, so that an effort is required to
ensure its success.

June is the month for picnics, and
although the weather was decidedly favour¬
able this year, the two Ceilidhs, Oban and
Lorn Association and St. Columba Gaelic
Church organisations had splendid outings.
The St. Columba Gaelic Choir bring the pic¬
nic season to a close by visiting Busby on 1st
July.
