etc. While on this subject let me say that
there is a great task before the churches of
the Gaelic-speaking area. No one can move
about the Highlands and attend public
worship in Gaelic without being struck with
the poverty of the praise. In some districts,
perhaps not more than one-third of the
congregation joins in the singing, and even
then in a slow and dull manner. Those of us
who are not too advanced in years cannot but
feel how rapidly this deteriorating process
goes on. One is pleased to understand that
the Church of Scotland has realised this evil,
and is taking means to correct it. But why
should not the other churches follow suit?
It is a matter that concerns them all, and on
which they could find common ground for
co-operation. Could not a Committee' of all
the Churches be formed to promote a
peripatetic School of Psalmody in the
Highlands?
The Classes came to a close on April 28th.
Before parting the men expressed their grati¬
tude to me personally and gave me a memento
of our meeting. They wished me to express
their indebtedness to all who contributed to
make their stay both a profit and a pleasure,
a sentiment which I heartily endorse.
Mention should be made in this connection
(in addition to their instructors) of the
following : —Mr. H. F. Campbell, Aberdeen,
for his unfailing interest and assiduity in
securing the success of the class; Mr. M.
Morrison, Director of Education, Inverness,
and Mr. Crampton-Smith, Rector of Inverness
Royal Academy, for their solicitude about
the comfort of the class in setting apart a
class-room with a fire-place (the heating
apparatus being let down during the Easter
holidays) ; also the janitor and staff of school
cleaners; and last, but not least, Mr. R.
Macleod, for securing such comfortable
quarters for the strangers.
In view of the limited response to the
invitation to attend the classes, it would seem
advisable to change the venue of the school
next year. The various churches, with the
best will in the world, can ill afford in those
times the necessary outlays in grants to
enable many of their missionaries to attend.
But were, say, Kyle of Lochalsh made the
centre this would tap the West Coast and the
Long Island, where the majority of our Gaelic
missionaries are situated. Were this done
and due notice given the response would no
doubt be encouraging.
