do wrongly with the relative form of the
verb in order to make up the requisite
number of syllables. At the end of the
Conlaoch section, the poet—or rather the
Dean—^finishes with the second couplet of
a quatrain, the first couplet being lacking:
A chumha giodh m6r a fuaim,
m lugha an br6n ata orainn.
“Though loud the noise of Cuchullin’s
lament, not less is the sorrow felt by us.”
This introduced the third section, now lost.
In Rel. Celt., I., 62—“A chow gai mak
sawalti mor a foym”; M‘L., p. 86—“Mak
sawalti mor a foyme.” But “mak sawalti”
(mac Sualtaigh, Sualtach’s son, i.e.,
Cuchullin) is an interlinear gloss,
explanatory of “a chumha,” not part of the
text.
Whether the Conlaoch section was
actually composed by the poet, Giolla
Caluim, himself, or “lifted,” or adapted, by
him from an older poem, is rather an
interesting question, but it cannot be dis¬
cussed here. One relevant fact, however,
may be noted. In the Dean’s text, at the
end of the first section of the poem, the poet
says he is to give ‘ vrskall nar zalve roytfm, ’ ’
“a tale that has not been shaped before”
(uirsg^al n&r dhealbhadh romham). Here
Rel. Celt, has “vrskall mar zawe,” and
M‘L. has “wrskal nar zawe, ” both wrongly :
nar is perfectly clear, and zalve is also clear
on close inspection.

The beginnings of lines on the lower half of
the last page of the poem are now mostly
illegible owing to abrasion; the MS. was
apparently more legible in Dr. Cameron’s
time.
I have conjecturally completed, within
parentheses, rann 3b, 4d, 12b; the recon¬
struction of 10 and 18 is partly conjectural.
