14 AN GAIDHEAL An Damhar, 1932.
All such evidence went to show that the
Gaelic legal tradition had behind it a vener¬
able antiquity with which the people were
far from ignorant. It was cultivated by men
learned in the customs and institutions of
the Gael long before Brennus the Gaul
weighed Roman justice in his scales and
balanced its political expediency with the
Celtic broadsword. And it was interpreted
and expounded by sages and Brehon-druids,
who inspired Gaeldom with deep respect for
law and religion, with that “love of equal
and indifferent justice’’ and the desire to
enjoy “the protection and benefit of the
law,’’ which England’s proscription of the
Brehon laws could never uproot, and which
the Elizabethan statesman, Sir John Davies,
divined to be the animating force behind the
national resistance to English usurpation.
On such a legal tradition, dependent wholly
on public respect rather than organised
despotism, the social and political stability
of all Gaeldom had been established, and the
way it had endured a tremendous hammer¬
ing from the enemies of peace and goodwill
gave every promise that the Gael would
come into their own again when the arm of
force was removed from the levers of power.
During the evening a programme of vocal
and musical selections from Gaelic bards
and the works of Franz Liszt was arranged
by Mrs. Agnes Gillman and Miss Margaret
Leslie, L.T.C.M.
