volve the least interference dur¬
ing the summer, with little
activity December to February.
Plans to keep the fishermen
informed when the area would
be activated included: —
(1) The appointment of a
liaison officer between the
range and the fishermen
(2) A radio telephone on the
Monach Isles where the lobster
fishermen spent the night in
bothies after setting their
creels.
(3) A fast motor launch so
the Army can co-operate with
fishermen at sea.
Extent of Fishing
A handout about the fishing
industry of the Lists prepared
by Mr Duncan Erskine, Manag¬
ing Director of Minch Shellfish
(Ltd.), in co-operation with the
fishermen showed that 43 boats
were actively engaged in fishing
in the Uists and Barra and
five from Mallaig. Since the
advent of the 12 mile limit
Breton fishermen no longer
came and there had been a
significant rise fron the esti¬
mated :0,000. fib.:* "1966 .10
129,000 lbs. in fys?. "With the
new fishing boats provided with
the assistance of the H.I.D.B.
and the assistance in capital in¬
vestment they had made there
was every possibility that this
would increase further, possibly
to 3 times as much in 3-4 years
ahead. At least 300 people were
to a large degree dependent on
the fishing industry. Lobster
grounds extended to the 20
fathom mark and Mallaig boats
fished up to 30 fathoms. This
brought boats up to five miles
from shore on the West Coast.
The increase in activity at the
rocket range during June to
September was adding a new
dimension to the whole scheme
and restrictions should be looked
at afresh. 76% of lobster land¬
ings were brought in during this
period.
Mr D. J. Mackay, Director
of An Comunn Gaidhealach
representing the Bemera fisher¬
men suggested that there had
been a serious lack of consulta¬
tion if the fishermen only
heard rumours two months ago
of the frequency of firing. He
expressed the concern felt by
the Bemera fishermen at the
application of restrictions and
emphasised that it was not the
extensions which worried fisher¬
men as a whole but the effect
on the whole economy of the
Islands. Military establishments
were politically unstable and it
would be unwise to depend for
the future on the employment
they provided even if there
were a number of jobs of more
than a menial nature. The ap-
