102 AN Q AID HEAL.
AN T-URRAMACH CALUM MACLEOID
NACH MAIREANN.
Thainig sgeula air cruadal,
Gun do chuir iad san uaigh thu,
Leodaich urramaich nasal,
Baigheil, cairdeil, gun mheang.
Tha do chairdean ri cumha,
’S lionmhor iadsan tha dubhach,
Do chorp alainn bhith ’n tasgadh
Cist dhionaich sa’ chill.
Ach b’ e deoin an Ard- Fhreasdail
Dorus bhualadh san fheasgar,
Ghairm a sheirbhiseach teisteil
Gu aros nan naomb.

The Secretary referred to the vacant chair and said that,
in ordinary circumstances, the Senior Vice-President would
be called upon to proceed in the absence of the President. On
this occasion the chair was vacant owing to the passing of our
esteemed President, and, in accordance with Rule 43 of the
Constitution and Rules of the Association, “the Executive
Council shall have power to fill any vacancies which may
occur between Annual Meetings in their own number, or in the
offices of President or Vice-President, and such appointments,
shall continue in force until the ensuing Annual Meeting.”
On the motion of Dr. John Cameron, Mr. Donald MacDonald,
Inverness, Senior Vice-President, was appointed President
until the Annual Meeting takes place. Mr. MacDonald took
the chair and invited the other two Vice-Presidents, Mr.
John M. Bannerman and Dr. John Cameron, to accompany
him to the platform. In thanking the members for the honour
they had done him, Mr. MacDonald asked the members to be
upstanding while he made the following reference to the
passing of the Rev. Malcolm MacLeod, President of An
Comunn.
“An Mhnathan ’a a Dhaoin-uaisle—Is e gu dearbh buille
throm a thuit oirnn uile le crich aithghearr a’ Chinn Suidhe,
an t-Urramach Calum MacLeoid. Is beag a shaoil sinn uine
gle bheag air ais gum biodh an Sar Ghaidheal urramach agus
ar Fear-iuil ’na shineadh anns a’ chiste chaoil aig an am so.
“ Is docha nach ’e1! aon againn a thuig gu buileach an
obair mhor a rinn e ’na latha air son ar canain’s ar ceol, agus
gu h-araidh Litreachas nan Gaidheal, gun a bhith a di-chuimh-
neachadh gach oidhirp a rinn e air son leas a dhaoine ann an
iomadh doigh. Rinn e obair ionmholta mar Cheann Suidhe a ’
Chomuinn fad ochd bliadhna agus stiuir e sinn le cridhe blath
agus inntinn shoilleir anns na bliadhnachan dorcha sin. A
bharrachd air sin bha e ’n a Fhear-deasachaidh air miosachan
a’ Chomuinn re dheich bliadhna. Thog e An Gaidheal gu
inbhe aird le fior sgoilearachd, chan ann a mhain an Gaidhlig
ach ann an canainean Ceilteach eile. Bidh gach earrann a
thainig a mach fo a laimh-san ’nan carragh-cuimhne air
Calum MacLeoid cho fad’s a bhios neach beo a leughas Gaidhlig.
Agus cha do sheachainn e aon chothrom air staid na
Gaidhealtachd is nan Gaidheal a thoirt fa chomhair an Ard-
riaghaltais, ag gearan nach ’eil na Gaidheil a’ faighinn cothrom
na Feinne agus nach d’ fhuair riamh.
Choisinn e agus fhuair e ard-urram bho Oilthigh Dhun-
eideann—D.D., ach, mo chreach, cha robh e an dan gum biodh
an t-urram so air a bhuileachadh air gu pearsanta. Thainig
am has aithghearr eatorra.
“Tha sinn an diugh ’ga chaoidh mar Fhear-Iiiil is mar
charaid, a bha gu nadurra coibhneil agus tuigseach. Cha bhi
e furasda am beam a rinn a bhas a lionadh, ach bidh cuimhne
chubhraidh againn uile air a’ Cheann Suidhe.
A Chuid de Pharras dha.
“ Cha di-chuimhnich sinn a bhanntrach agus an teaghlach
’nan aonaranachd agus dh’ iarrainn gun cuireadh an Rimaire
fios thuca a leigeil ris am meas a bha aig a’ Chomunn air an
fhear nach maireann agus gur e ar dochas agus ar guidhe gum
biodh Dia uile-chumhachdach leotha-san ’nan eigin agus ’nan
trioblaid.”
The Minute of Meeting held on 5th April was read, approved
and signed ; apologies were intimated from several members of
the Council. The Minute of Finance Committee was read by
the Treasurer, and Dr. John Cameron, Convener, suggested
that approval of the minute be taken along with the Financial
Statements later on.
Minute of Meeting of Education Committee was read.
The Committee reported that the Summer School on Social
Life and Activity in the Highlands and Islands, to be held at
Inverlochy, had to be cancelled. The school, which was being
organised in conjunction with the Scottish Education Depart¬
ment, was primarily for the benefit of the Gaelic-speaking
community of the Highlands and Islands, and the Committee
regretted that the support given was so meagre and the hope
was expressed that the Department would give a similar
opportunity next year, and that full advantage would be
taken of it. The Committee recommended that the Education
Committees of the Gaelic-speaking communities be approached
with a view to receiving a deputation from An Comunn on
the position of Gaelic in the Primary Schools. The Minute
was approved on the motion of the Convener, Mr. Farquhar
MacRae, seconded by Mr. Donald Thomson.
The Minute of Publication Committee was read. The
Committee reported that two of the volumes of the new series
of “ Gaelic Readers ” are now in type and that the miscellany
Alba is in course of being set up in type. The editorship of
An Gdidheal being vacant owing to the death of Rev. Malcolm
Macleod, it was moved, seconded and agreed to recommend
to the Executive Council that the Rev. T. M. Murchison be
appointed Editor.
The Committee recommended that at the Aberdeen Mod
there should be a Book-Stall showing An Comunn’s publica¬
tions. The Minute was approved on the motion of Mr. Farqu¬
har MacRae, seconded by Mr. Angus Mathieson. Thereafter
the Convener, Rev. T. M. Murchison, gave a resume of the
work which the Publication Committee has in hand and hopes
to complete in the very near future.
