AN GAIDHEAL.
An t-Iuchar, 1940.
EADARAINN FHIN.
Sir,—The following observations of the great
Duke of Argyll is of intense interest at the present
hour for educationalists, and should be an inspiring
stimulus to all Highlanders. It appears in a letter
to The, Celtic Magazine in 1876 :—■
“ There can be no doubt whatever that the joint
use and teaching of two languages has in itself a
highly educative influence. The habit of translating
from one language to the other tends to bring out
the intelligence of the child, and to increase his
powers, both of thought and expression.”
By way of parenthesis, I wonder if any of your
readers experienced the poetical giant stride in
“ Oran gaoil do charaid oig,” by Robb Donn?
What genius ! Read it if you can. There you will
drink the magic of a “runair” of nature, beating
time, time, time!—Yours, etc.,
Angus Robertson.
