AN GAIDHEAL.
An t-Og-mhios, 1940.
SECRETARY’S NOTES.
The Ayr Branch of An Comunn held its
first Gathering in the Ayr Town Hall on Friday,
12th April. There was a very large attendance
of the public and it was very appropriate that
the Marquis of Ailsa should preside over the
first Highland gathering in the county town.
His Lordship as most members will know has
always taken a very keen interest in the work
of An Comunn and has acquired the language.
He is much interested in the place-names of the
County of Ayr and his knowledge of Gaelic
enables him to study these with understanding
and pleasure. It was interesting to learn from
him that the original Gaelic name of his ancestral
home, Culzean Castle, was Citil nan Eun.
We congratulate the office-bearers and
members of the Ayr Branch on the success of
their first Grand Concert and on their choice
of Gaelic Singers—Miss Jenny M. B. Currie,
Miss Margrat M. Duncan, and Mr. Neil
MacLean.
The Govan Branch of An Comunn is about
to close another very successful session. Meet¬
ings are held each Friday evening in the Town
Hall, Govan, and the attendance is seldom less
than 400. The Secretary of An Comunn
presided at a Ceilidh there on 3rd May and
conveyed to the members the cordial thanks
of An Comunn for their splendid support of
the Central Committee, to whose funds they
contributed over £20. It was intimated at this
meeting that a Gaelic Class would be held
next session. Mr. Coll MacDougall (Luing)
is the popular President, and Mr. John Campbell
has given years of meritorious service as
Secretary.

The Paisley Highlanders’ Association held
their Annual Mod on 7th May. There were
three Vocal Classes—one for Juniors and two
for Seniors, which attracted an entry of 23.
Mr. Duncan MacCallum was Gaelic adjudicator
and Mr. Gilmour Barr music adjudicator, and
both gentlemen gave valuable hints to the
competitors. The Southern Propaganda Sub¬
committee was officially represented by Mrs.
J. B. Dunlop, Vice-Convener and Mrs. Barron.
The General Secretary and Assistant Secretary
were also present. There was a good attendance
throughout the proceedings, and it was quite
evident that the public appreciate the efforts
of the Paisley Highlanders to encourage good
Gaelic-singing. Mr. Charles Stuart, Secretary,
acted as Chairman, and deserves the cordial
thanks of all lovers of Gaelic music for his work
in promoting these Mods.
Members will have read in the January
number of An Gaidheal that the Act and
Industry Committee had secured a limited
amount of the publication of the Scottish
Anthropological and Folk lore Society, which
contains Miss Lamont of Knockdow’s
lectures on “ The History of Celtic Art ” with
illustrations. The Society has generously
allowed members of An Comunn to buy copies
at the reduced rate of 1/7 instead of 2/6. Any
members who wish to obtain this valuable and
interesting brochure, are advised to order their
copies without delay from the office of An
Comunn, 131 West Regent Street, Glasgow,
C.2.
