READ Annual Report on Vaccine Operations in the Punjab, for the year 1867, furnished by Dr. A. M.
            Garden, Superintendent-General of Vaccination.

                REMARKS.

1. The returns for 1867 show a falling off in the number

of persons vaccinated, both in the
case of vaccinations performed by
the special establishment and those
performed at Dispensaries.* In the
former case the falling off is said
to result from the difficulty of supervising operations in the Rawulpindi
district, on account of its large size and the sparseness of its population;
but no explanation is given of the falling off in the numbers vaccinated
by dispensary establishments, though in some districts the falling off
is very considerable, as will be seen from the subjoined statement :—

* "Although small-pox has appeared in some districts
where the establishment has worked, it has not in one
instance spread throughout the district, as was invari-
ably the case formerly."

2. But it is satisfactory to learn that the prevalence of small-pox begins

to evince a decided tendency to di-
minish, and the fact noted in para. 5
of the report* is very gratifying.

3. The attention of the Commissioners of Peshawar, Derajat, and
Amballa will be called to the danger-resulting from the practice of inoculation
in the districts of Bannú and Hazárah and of Kunawar, and they will be re-
quested to consider the desirability of adopting all legitimate means for dis-
couraging the practice.
