does not necessarily follow that characters which are useful in separating general
need also be of value in grouping them. The writer at one time was prepared to
adopt the view of Miquel rather than that of Bentham (Fourn. As. Soc. Beng.
lXVi. 2. 202). Both authors worked with incomplete material before them, and
the conclusion of each was, under the circumstances, equally natural. Further
study of the sub-order Cœsalpinieae leads the writer to advocate the necessity for
retaining an open mind;the genus Sindora rather affords evidence against any
need for the separation of Amherstieae from Cynometreae than marks itself
definitely as a member of either tribe.

The majority, though not all of the species—the original Galedupa of Rum-
phius and the Intsia coriacea of Maingay being exceptions—are characterised by
having the outer faces of the pod armed with strong straight hollow spines. In
S. siamensis, the only species known to the writer in the living state, the lips of
these spines exude large drops of a pale-white, translucent, very adhesive, fragrant
resin. The hard cotyledons, when sawn across, have the odour of cocoanut oil.
