REPORT

ON THE WORKING OF THE

BURMA GOVERNMENT MEDICAL SCHOOL, RANGOON,

FOR THE YEAR 1913-14.

The present report deals with the working of the school from the 1st April
1913 to the 31st March 1914.

     2. The year began with 37 students:—

First year one remanded for one year,
Second year eleven promoted and two remanded for three months,
Third year ten promoted, three remanded for a year each, and
one remanded for three months,
Fourth year seven promoted and two remanded for a year each.

Of those who were remanded for three months, one from the second year was
removed for failure and the other two were promoted after a re-examination at
the end of the third month. One second year public student was removed from
the school for misconduct in June 1913.

     3. At the commencement of the session we had 54 students in all including
the 19 new admissions into the school:—

                   First year                                       20
                   Second year                                       10
                   Third year                                       14
                   Fourth year                                       10
                                      Total                                       54

Of these 34 were public and 20 private students. All the ten new public students
were Burmans. Seven possessed the necessary educational qualifications. It
will be noticed from Statement D that the number of admissions with the required
qualifications is steadily on the increase.

     4. Five of the newly admitted public students absconded from the hostel
soon after they joined the school. One of them rejoined in a few days. It was
thought that the disciplinary measures enforced were the cause, but further
enquiries elicited the fact that that was not so. Most of these students had no
desire to take up Medicine at all and were only induced to do so by their relatives
or friends, and one of them was quite unable to follow the lectures and was under
the impression that he would draw his scholarship money but not be obliged to
do much in the shape of work in return. On the whole it was a good thing that
this happened within the first week of the session, as we were able to replace
them by a better class of boys.

     5. The attendance of the students during the year was on the whole satis-
factory.

     6. A noticeable feature during the year is the re-organisation of the teaching
staff of the school. The staff was strengthened and the table below shows the
names of the lecturers and the subjects taught by them. A new syllabus of the
