death the Barony of Douglas of Amesbury, the Earldom of Ruglen,
Viscounty of Riccartoun and Barony of Hillhouse became extinct. The
Dukedom of Queensberry, Marquisate of Dumfriesshire, Earldoms of
Drumlanrig and Sanquhar, Viscounties of Nith, Torthorvvald and Ross,
Baronies of Douglas of Kinmont, Middlebie and Dornock devolved on
Henry, third Duke of Buccleuch. (See No. 33 e). The Earldom of
March, Viscounty of Peebles, Baronies of Douglas of Neidpath, Lyne
and Munard devolved on the Earl of Wemyss. (See No. 32 d). The
Marquisate and Earldom of Queensberry, Viscounty of Drumlanrig,
Baronies of Douglas of Hawick and Tibberis devolved on his heir-male
Douglas of Kelhead. (See No. 43, and below).
(38) Sir William Douglas of Kelhead, second son of first Earl of Queensberry
(see No. 30), died 1673. He married, first, Agnes, daughter of George
Fawside of Fawside ; secondly, Jean Stuart of the Traquair family. By
his first wife he had : —
(a) William Douglas. (d) Archibald Douglas.
(b) James (No. 39). (e) George Douglas.
(c) Robert Douglas.
Btni0 recorded in Lyon Office 1672-77 ; patent dated 1668. — 1 and 4. Argent,
a man's heart proper crowned gules, on a chief azure three mullets of the first.
2 and 3. Azure, a betid between six cross crosslets fitchy or ; all within a
bordure engrailed gules, charged with eight bezants. (In 1772 these Arms
were matriculated without the bordure.) Crest : A man's heart proper
powdered with bezants, and crowned and winged or. MOTTO : "Forward! "

(39) JAMES DOUGLAS, born 19th February 1639; died about 1707. On 26th
February 1668 he was created a BARONET. He married, about 1667,
Catherine, second daughter of James, second Earl of Queensberry (No.
31), and had an only son : —
(40) Sir William Douglas, second Baronet, bom about 1675 ; died 10th
October 1733. He married, about 1705, Helen, daughter of Colonel
John Erskine, who died 26th July 1754, leaving: —
(a) John (No. 41).
(b) William Douglas, died unmarried 1786.
(c) Charles Douglas of Breconwhat, married Mrs Young ; died
without issue 13th December 1770.
(d) James Douglas, M.D., married a daughter of Sir Patrick
Maxwell, Bart. ; had two sons, who died unmarried.
(e) Archibald Douglas, died unmarried.
(/) Stewart Douglas, died unmarried 30th June 1795.
(g) Erskine Douglas, died 10th February 1791. Married Eleanor,
widow of Thomas Witter, and had : —
(1) William Erskine, born 1766; died 1771.
(h) Francis Edward Douglas, married Mrs Hunter ; died without
issue 2 1st June 1793, aged seventy.
(i) David. (See No. 54).
(/) Thomas Douglas, died unmarried 1744.
(41) SIR John Douglas, third Baronet, born about 1708 ; died 13th November
1778. He married, about 1730, Christian, sixth daughter of Sir Wm.
Cunningham, Bt, of Caprington. She died November 1741, leaving : —
(a) William (No. 42).
(b) Charles James Sholto (No. 50).
