On the Seal of his Countess, 1401, are — Two shields. Dexter shield per pale.
Dexter side, A heart, on a chief three stars • Sinister side, A lion rampant
crowned (Galloway). Sinister shield. Three stars (Moray) (Macdonald).
Nisbet gives the Arms of Moray of Bothwell as — Azure, three stars argent.
(11) Archibald, fourth Earl of Douglas, was born about 1372. In 1424 he
joined King Charles VII. of France, and was created by him DUKE OF
ToURAINE, but was killed the same year, 17th August, at the battle of
Verneuil. He married, about 1390, Princess Margaret, daughter of John,
Earl of Carrick, afterwards King Robert III. He had two sons : —
(«) Archibald (No. 12).
(b) Sir James Douglas, killed with his father at Verneuil, 1424.

lion rampant crowned (Galloway). En surtout, Three stars (Moray).
SUPPORTERS: Two savages (Laing). [Plate II., fig. 5.] On Seal, 1409. —
All as above, but without Moray (Laing). On Seal, 1418. — 1. A heart,
on a chief three stars. 2. A lion rampant crowned. 3. Three stars. 4. A
saltire and chief (Annandale). CREST : A plume of ostrich feathers. SUP-
PORTER : A hairy savage holding a club erect in right hand (Laing).

Lindsay shows these Arms: 1. Argent, a heart gules, on a chief azure three
mullets of the f eld. 2. Azure, a lion rampant argent (no crown). 3. Azure,
three mullets argent. 4. Or, a saltire and chief gules.
On Seal of his widow, Margaret Stewart, 1425. — Shield per pale. Dexter,
Quarterly. 1. Three fleurs-de-lis (Touraine). 2. A heart, on a chief three
stars (Douglas). 3. A saltire and chief (Annandale). 4. A lion rampant
crowned (Galloway). [Plate II, fig. 7.] Sinister, A lion rampant within a
double tressure flory-counter-flory (Scotland).
Note. — The Arms of Touraine are supposed to be the same as of France — Azure,
three fleurs-de-lis or. Those of Scotland are — Or, a lion rampant gules, armed and
langued azure, within a double tressure flory-counter-flory of the second. (See also
Plate I. for combined Arms of this Earl.)
(12) Archibald, fifth Earl of Douglas and second Duke of Touraine. He
was born about 1390, and was known as the Earl of Wigtown. He was,
about 1421, created Comte de Longueville. On 26th June 1439 he died
at Restalrig, and was buried in St. Bride's Church of Douglas. He
married Euphemia, daughter of Sir Patrick Graham of Kincardine,
probably in 1424. She married, secondly, James Hamilton, first Lord
Hamilton, and died about 1469. They had : —
(a) William (No. 13).
(b) David Douglas, killed with his brother, 24th November 1440.
(c) Margaret Douglas, " the Fair Maid of Galloway," who
married the eighth and ninth Earls of Douglas.
HriTIS. — Nisbet gives his Arms as Earl of Wigtown : 1. Azure, a lion rampant
argent c?-ozvned or (Galloway). 2 and 3. Gules, a chevron within a double
tressure flory-counter-flory argent (Wigtown or Fleming). 4. Argent, a heart
gules, on a chief azure three stars of the field (Douglas). [Plate II., fig. 8.]
On Seal, 1423. — 1. A heart, on a chief three stars, and above them a label of three
points. 2. A lion rampant (not crowned). 3. Three stars. 4. A saltire and
chief. Crest : A plume of eleven ostrich feathers spreading like a fan.
SUPPORTERS: Two angels draped, with wings expanded (Laing and
Macdonald). On Seal, 143 1. — 1. Three fleurs-de-lis. 2. A heart, on a
chief three stars. 3. A saltire and chief. 4. A lion rampant crowned.
