the Mains of Bonjedward, and was probably ancestress of
the Douglases of Bonjedward (Maxwell's History).
HriTlS of William, first Earl of Douglas and Mar, on Seal, 1356. — A heart, and
on a chief three stars. [Plate II., fig. 2.] These Arms also appear on
Seal, 1373, with the addition that the shield is supported from behind by
a lion sejant, it's head in a helmet. CREST : A plume of eleven feathers
(Laing and Macdonald). On Seal, 1380.— 1 and 4. A heart, and on a
chief three stars. 2 and 3. A bend between six cross crosslets, fitcliy (Mar).
SUPPORTERS : Two lions sejant, their heads within a helmet on which is
the Crest : A plume of eight feathers issuing from a holder (Laing and
Macdonald). These Arms are shown in the Armorial de Gelre (fourteenth
century), as — 1 and 4. Argent, a heart gules, on a chief azure, three mullets
of the field. 2 and 3. A sure, a bend between six cross crosslets fitchy or.
CREST : White or argent issuing from a red holder. [Plate II., fig. 3.] On
his signet appears a heart crowned between two demi lions {Douglas Book).
(9) James, second Earl of Douglas and Mar. Born about 1358, and was
killed at Otterburn or Chevy Chase about 12th August 1388, and after-
wards buried in Melrose. The Earl married about 1373 Princess Isabel,
daughter of King Robert II. She died about 1410 having had only one
son, who died in infancy. The Earl had, however, two illegitimate sons : —
(a) William, ancestor of the Dukes of Queensberry (No. 21).
(b) Archibald, ancestor of Douglas of Cavers (No. 78).
HCITIS on Seal, 1373. — A heart, on a chief three stars surmounted by a label of
three points. CREST : A plume of twelve feathers increasing in height
towards centre. Supporters : Two lions sejant guardant (Laing and
Macdonald). On another Seal. — 1 and 4. A heart, on a chief three stars.
2 and 3. A bend between six cross crosslets fitchy. CREST : A plume of
feathers. SUPPORTER : A lion (Macdonald).
The Earldom of Mar devolved on his sister, and that of Douglas on
his kinsman : —
(10) Archibald, third Earl OF Douglas, natural son of "the Good " Sir James
(No. 5). He was known as "the Grim." He was the builder of Thrieve
Castle, and died in 1400. He married Joanna, widow of Sir Thomas
Moray, Lord of Bothwell, by whom he acquired the Lordship of Bothwell.
He had two sons : —
(a) Archibald (No. 11). (b) James (No. 14).
He had also an illegitimate son : —
(c) Sir William Douglas of Nithsdale. He died about 1392.
His wife was the Princess Gylis, daughter of King
Robert II., with whom he acquired the Lordship of
Nithsdale. They had a son : —
(1) Sir William, who probably died in the Tower,
London, about 1420.
Hmt6 of the third Earl of Douglas, on Seal, 1364. — Ermine, a heart, on a chief
three stars. SUPPORTERS: Two lions (Macdonald). On Seal, 1373. —
Same Arms. CREST : A tower embattled, out of which issues a peacock's
head holding in its beak an escroll inscribed " What tyde." SUPPORTERS:
Two savages (Laing and Macdonald). On Seal, 1393. — Impaled. Dexter,
A heart, on a chief three stars; Sinister, A lion rampant crowned
(Galloway). SUPPORTERS : Two savages (Macdonald). Sir David
Lindsay shows the Arms of " The Lord of Galloway of Auld " as —
Azure, a lion rampant argent, crowned or. [Plate 1 1., fig. 4.]
