Entering the 33d Eegiment, Madras Native Infantry, he has
attained professional advancement.
Holland Ward Holmes Burnes, third son of Dr James
Burnes, was born at Bhooj on the 15th September 1833.
Entering the Indian Navy, he died at Calcutta in 1873, when
in command of the Feroze, the yacht of the governor-general.
Hamilton Farquhar Holmes Burnes, fourth son of Dr James
Burnes, was born at Edinburgh on the 27th November 1836.
He entered the army in 1855, and attained the rank of cap-
tain. He retired 14th November 1868, and is since deceased.
Dalhousie Holmes Burnes, fifth son of Dr James Burnes,
was born at Bombay on the 5th April 1839. He became
an officer of engineers, and died unmarried in 1872.
Sidney Holmes Burnes, sixth son of Dr James Burnes, was
born at Bombay on the 13th August 1841. He died at
London in 1871.
Alexander Holmes Burnes, youngest son of Dr James
Burnes, was born at Bombay on the 11th April 1843. He
entered the Bombay Army in 1860, and retired 14th Septem-
ber 1867.
Adam Burnes, second surviving son of James Burnes, Pro-
vost of Montrose, was born on the 19th February 1802. He
was many years a solicitor in Montrose, where he died, 15th
November 1872. He married, first, on the 3d September
1827, Horatia, daughter of Harry Gordon, Esq., who died
November 2d, 1834; secondly, 18th June 1838, Isabella,
daughter of William Scott, Esq., who survives.
By his first wife Adam Burnes had two sons, Adam and
Alexander Horatio. Adam, the elder son, born 12th June
1832, emigrated to Australia; he became manager of the
Colonial Bank at Melbourne. He subsequently resided in
