paring materials for a history of his house, which in a thin
duodecimo he printed, for private circulation, under the title
of "Notes on his Name and Family." Edinburgh, 1851. He
was J.P. for the counties of Middlesex and Forfar. He died
at Manchester on the 19th September 1862, and his remains
were deposited at Swindon Church, near Cheltenham.
Dr James Burnes married, first, on the 28th March 1829,
at St Thomas' Church, Bombay, Sophia, second daughter of
Major-General Sir George Holmes, K.C.B., by whom he had
seven sons and two daughters. He married, secondly, on the
17th June 1862, at St Mary Abbot's, Kensington, Esther
Price, daughter of a landowner in "Wales. She resides at 40
Ladbrook Square, Kensington.
Sophia Holmes, elder daughter of Dr James Burnes, born
at Bhooj 6th September 1832, died there on the 1st February
1833. Isabella Cecilia Holmes, the younger daughter, born
at Edinburgh on the 4th February 1835, died there 24th May
1835, her remains being deposited in the Canongate church-
yard.
George James Holmes Burnes, eldest son of Dr James
Burnes, born at Bhooj on the 9th December 1829, obtained a
commission in the 1st Bombay Fusiliers ; he received a medal
and two clasps for the Punjab, Moultan, and Guzerat. After
a lengthened captivity, consequent on his efforts to save a
child from the violence of the mutineers, he was cruelly
murdered at Lucknow on the 19th November 1857. In the
vestibule of the parish church, Montrose, a monumental
tablet, erected by his brother officers, commemorates his
valour.
Fitz-James Holmes Burnes, second son of Dr James
Burnes, was born at Bhooj on the 6th September 1831.
