in 1842, John Stuart, advocate, Aberdeen, and secretary of
the Spalding Club. An accomplished antiquary, Mr Stuart
was in 1854 appointed one of the official searchers in the
Eegister House, Edinburgh; he was in 1873 promoted as
principal keeper of the register of deeds. He died at Amble-
side on the 19th July 1877, in his sixty-fourth year. The
degree of LL.D. was in 1866 conferred on him by the Uni-
versity of Aberdeen, in recognition of his literary eminence.
Of his numerous p\iblications relating to Scottish history and
antiquities, the best known is his " Sculptured Stones of
Scotland," a work in two folio volumes. Dr Stuart was
twice married. His first wife, Elizabeth Burnes, died on
the 1st March 1848; she had a son, Eobert, who died in
September 1846, aged two years; also two daughters. Mary,
the elder daughter, is unmarried; Jane Gordon, the second
Slaughter, born January 1347, married in 1867 the Eev.
John Woodward, of St Mary's Episcopal Church, Mon-
trose, with issue, two sons, who died in childhood, and two
daughters.
John, youngest son of David Burnes, farmer, Boghead, was
a merchant in Aberdeen ; he died unmarried.
George Burnes, third son of James Burnes, farmer in
Brawlinmuir, rented the farm of ElfhilL in the parish of
Fetteresso. He married, and had five sons and five daugh-
ters. James, the eldest son, was baptized 26th May 1729 ;
Eobert, the second son, 2d July 1730 ; John, the third son,
3d June 1733 ; George, fourth son, 22d June 1746 ; William,
fifth son, 17th September 1749. Christian, the eldest
daughter, was baptized 25th May 1735 ; Elizabeth, second
daughter, 27th June 1737 ; Anne, third daughter, 6th May
1739; Jean, fourth daughter, 23d April 1744; and Helen,
