| Description | Two soldiers in hospital laughing and chatting. They appear to be sharing a funny story or joke. The man on the left is lying on a bed, and the other is sitting in a chair. The man on the right is wearing a long dressing gown and has his head bandaged. There is a small stool or bedside table between them, on top of which is a book, papers and what is possibly a punnet of strawberries. In a similar photograph of the same two men, the caption reads 'HAVE A STRAWBERRY - SCENE IN A HOSPITAL'. Many official photographs taken during the war were used by the Government and Military as propaganda. This particular photograph, along with its light-hearted and flippant caption, is a good example of the type that would have been used to reassure those at home about conditions at the Front and the treatment of wounded soldiers. | Description | Ernest Brooks was the first British official war photographer to be assigned to the Western Front in 1916. Previously a 'Daily Mirror' photographer, he was given the honorary rank of Second Lieutenant. His remit was to take as many photographs as possible, with as much variety as possible. Using his inconspicuous hand-held camera Brooks was free to wander, sometimes capturing his subjects unawares. Many of the images taken by Brooks were used to fuel the propaganda machine at home and abroad. Despite this Brooks, who was very aware of composition and light, produced some very artistic and thought-provoking images. |
