| Description | Horse show behind the lines, during World War I. A line-up of men and horses are in a large grassy area surrounded by trees. According to the photograph's original caption this photograph was taken during a horse show. All of the contestants are positioned in rows. In each row there is one man and one horse in front of a carriage drawn by four horses. The men are all smartly dressed in full uniform, and all the horses are adorned with white fringes above their eyes. During the war events such as horse shows and sporting competitions were organised for the men, providing a rare opportunity to relax and a brief escape from the horrors of life at the Front. | Description | Ernest Brooks was the first British official war photographer to be assigned to the Western Front in 1916. Previously a 'Daily Mirror' photographer, he was given the honorary rank of Second Lieutenant. His remit was to take as many photographs as possible, with as much variety as possible. Using his inconspicuous hand-held camera Brooks was free to wander, sometimes capturing his subjects unawares. Many of the images taken by Brooks were used to fuel the propaganda machine at home and abroad. Despite this Brooks, who was very aware of composition and light, produced some very artistic and thought-provoking images. |
