Blackett and Ridley

(50) Blackett and Ridley

        BLACKETT and RIDLEY.

                An Excellent New SONG.

            (To the Tune of Hearts of Oak.)

                                    I.

COME on, my brave boys 'tis to glory we ſteer,
To add ſomething new, to an election year ;
No int'reſt ſhall bind us, no bribes ſhall incline,
For who are ſo free as the ſons of the Tyne ?
Men of worth were our members, the ſame they
remain,
               And ſtill we are ready,
               Steady, boys ſteady,
To chuſe and elect them, again, and again.

                                    II.

Tho' a Sailor ! a Surgeon ! and Glazier Combine !
And ſtrive to miſlead, the brave ſons of the Tyne,
The ſhameleſs Triumvir, from nothing they came,
And ſnall ſink, with contempt, into nothing again ;
For gratitude calls, and the call we'll obey,
               And always be ready,
               Steady boys, ſteady,
For Blackett and Ridley to vote on the day.

                                    III.

Tho' with LIES black as * HELL, they endeavour
to ftain,
Men of character, worth, and deſerving of fame,
In vain are their efforts, they've now done their worſt,
And like Frogs they may ſwell, till with envy they burſt ;
For Honour, and gratitude, both we'll obey
               And always be ready,
               Steady, boys, ſteady,
For Blackett, and Ridley, to poll on the day.

                                    VI.

Let Phipps with a tongue ſmooth as oil at his need
With promiſes gull them, and flatteries feed,
Let Delaval join him, and promiſe the fools,
To yield up his freedom, and walk by their rules ;
Such arts we deſpiſe, and ſuch condut condemn,
               And always are ready,
               Steady, boys, ſteady,
To oppoſe and reject them again, and again.

                                    V.

They ſay they'll return, but they'll find to their coſt,
That their time was miſ-ſpent, and their labour was
loſt,
For ſons of Newcaſtle, they'll find—eight in ten
Will oppoſe and reject them, again, and again,
While honour, and virtue, with joy we'll obey,
               And always be ready,
               Steady, boys, ſteady,
For Blackett and Ridley to poll on the day.
