'tbat they breath that Spirit of" deep repent-
ance, and humble joy, which it becomes sin-
ful men to indulge before tlie Most K-igh ;
that they should give such a view of our fallen
condition, and of the riches of redeeming
grace, as to excite our warmest affections,
and call forth our sweetest notes. These
\'ery impoitant objects, have been constantly
held in view in selectinci the following
Hymns, Flow far the translator has succeed
ed, is left to be derermined by the Churches
who ma}^ use them.
A number of the Assembly's Paraphrases
are fiere inserted, with some parts altered,
and others omitted. There fire a few also
from Dr. Smitli's new version of the Gaelic
Psalms. As for the rest, they arc taken from
a variety of Collections. They may with
greater propiiety be called imitations of the
original, than translations from it; as it was
deemed, of far greater importance to preserve
tl:e spirit and energy of a Hymn, than to ma-
nifest a fondness to be hteral in point of
la!ì2;uage.
It is only necessary to add, that perspi-
cuity in the style, and smoothness in the
verso, have been both attCiided to. Still,
however, the translator is sensible that defi-
ciencies in both may appear. But let it
be recollected, that this Collection of Hymns
